Today we’d like to introduce you to Dara Zycherman.
Hi Dara, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a kid, my parents taught me to be frugal. As a creative introvert, I also valued having autonomy over my time. When I went to college as an Environmental Science major, sustainability was front and center in my lifestyle. At some point along the way, I realized I was a “minimalist,” also known at the time as voluntary simplicity. After working at a sustainability-focused non-profit for twelve years, I embraced the freedom of starting my own business and teaching others how to live lightly through my approach, Meaningful Minimalism. So, I launched Less Equals More, where I provide professional organizing, minimalist lifestyle coaching, and minimalism education. I am also a paid speaker.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was surprisingly easy to leave the security of full-time employment, but along the way, I’ve been met with obstacles due to my lack of sales and marketing experience.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Less Equals More is a community of the minimalist-curious. My Meaningful Minimalism Method ensures that clients aren’t becoming minimalists to create a new identity or eliminate most of their stuff. Instead, I help clients clarify their priorities and values so they can map out what things and systems they need to support them. If sustainability is one of their priorities, I can also help them adopt related practices. I’m proud that my brand has also been consistent with its values and that I have been able to help so many people in a way that’s more than just organizing—it’s true self-discovery and changing their way of life. Since I offer minimalist lifestyle coaching, I can reach clients outside of Austin. But I still love in-person professional organizing. (I also travel for clients!) I’ve also enjoyed reaching larger audiences through my speaking services. Most people only need a nudge to move forward in the right direction, authentically.
What were you like growing up?
I was a quiet child who loved my family and stepped outside my comfort zone to connect with people. I enjoyed creative hobbies, including playing guitar and writing songs. By high school, I was concerned about environmental issues, leading me to study environmental science in college.
