Inspiring Conversations with Debora-Jean Cortes of Cake’s Body Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debora-Jean Cortes.

Debora-Jean, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m the founder of Cake’s Body Bar a small spa like weight-loss/beauty business located in Killeen, Texas.

I was born and raised in Texas and moved to Killeen in 2006, a pregnant single mom starting over. I worked in kitchens and real estate offices before finding my way into the Health insurance field where I got my producer license and settled in. When the pandemic hit, like everyone else my life changed, my routine changed, my eating and exercise habits changed and of course my body changed.

I received a beautiful full-length mirror/ jewelry box as birthday gift last year. I had never owned a full-length mirror and I didn’t realized why until I was looking at myself through one.

At 37, after three kids and a medically necessary hysterectomy my body was ravished. My confidence and self-esteem were at an all-time low. All I could see was my flaws and I had to fix them. My teeth were stained, my belly was lumpy, My lips were thin, skin was dry and OMG where did all this hair come from. I couldn’t be the only one, so I decided I wanted to make a change but not only a change for myself I wanted to help others. Other people not only look better but feel better and have more confidence. I looked in the mirror and I started a list of everything I wasn’t happy with. I researched, went to school and I’ve learned how to provide services to improve all those flaws.

Cake’s Body Bar officially opened July 26, 2021, inside of Luxé Salon and Spa Suites at 1805 Florence Road Suite 10, in Killeen, Texas.

As of February 2022, I have helped over 100 clients and made a few girlfriends along the way.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I 1st opened with the uncertainty of not knowing how profitable it would be I kept my full-time work from home insurance job. I had to play it safe. With a newly signed lease, I needed that guaranteed paycheck.

But then business was booming. I struggled with servicing clients around my unpredictable work hours. I contracted and mentored Certified Body Contourist and my best friend Amy Contreras to help fill in some gaps. By the time medicare open enrollment came in October, I was burning out. I felt like I was neglecting my clients just to work for someone else. With the support and encouragement of my partner, Richard who said “Focus on your brand. You didn’t become a business owner just to say you did it. Take that full jump and I’m here to catch you if I have to”, I quit my job in corporate America and became a full-time entrepreneur.

We’ve been impressed with Cake’s Body Bar, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Cake’s Body Bar offers non-surgical, non-invasive Body contouring and beautification services.

Success is finding something that you love doing and calling at work. I love to come to work and put a smile on my client’s faces. To show them before and after pictures and celebrate their progress and results. Success is being this example to my teenage children, showing them that it’s never too late to start over and love what you do.
