Inspiring Conversations with Desirine Ledan of Primerica Financial Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desirine Ledan.

Hi Desirine, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in humble circumstances. My parents, immigrants from the Caribbean, resided in Brooklyn, New York, and worked tirelessly to provide for their three children. I was the first in my family to pursue higher education. To make ends meet, I took on a demanding class load of 26 credits per semester and worked three part-time jobs while my parents struggled to afford college tuition.

After graduating from college, I secured a job as an Administrative Assistant. I quickly rose through the ranks, taking on more responsibilities and eventually being promoted to Representative Administration.

Driven by my desire for leadership, I progressed rapidly in my career. My final position was Director of Admissions. During this time, I also worked part-time for Primerica, helping others and supplementing my income as a single mother of two beautiful daughters. Primerica played a crucial role in helping me obtain all the necessary licenses. I joined their cause because I was a college graduate burdened with substantial student loan debt and barely able to make ends meet. I believed there had to be a better way to achieve the American dream, and Primerica offered me that opportunity.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I genuinely enjoyed helping people find a careers and providing for their families. However, in March 2008, I was diagnosed with Lupus, which was a devastating blow. Going thru a very stressful divorce and custody battle I was completely on my last leg. My situation made my body so weak I become deathly ill. Despite this, I continued working until August 2008, when I was rushed to the ER. That was my last day as Director of Admissions.

“I had worked so hard to achieve my goals, and in a matter of a few months, I lost everything—my career, my savings, my strength, my health, my joy, and my money. I didn’t have health insurance and couldn’t support my family. Desperate for a solution, I moved to Texas, a warmer climate where I could be with my family who supported me during my recovery. I was determined to regain my life and rebuild my future.”

Now, I live in a spacious home, own my own car, no longer take 14 different medications, and run my own financial service company. I’m proud to be the first West Indian American woman to achieve this in the Fort Hood, TX area.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
