Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabrielle Fisher.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been an artist. From a young age, I was always in talented art classes and I attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts in high school for visual arts. I felt that regular school was never for me. Fast forward through failed attempts of going to college multiple times and to 2013 when I drove from Louisiana to Los Angeles at 20 years old. I interviewed with Macy’s at the Beverly Center and told them that I was interested in working at one of the makeup counters as I had always thoroughly enjoyed makeup. I was offered a job at the Impulse Beauty Counter across from MAC Cosmetics and was immediately drawn to the artists that worked there and to the MAC culture. From there, I ended up moving back to New Orleans and I landed my “dream job” at the time working at MAC which went on to become a six years career! During our MAC update trainings, they would always show behind the scenes from Fashion Week and I would tear up from hearing the way that the key artists would describe the inspiration from the looks they created. I knew I wanted to do editorial makeup.
After getting married in 2018, my career took a turn and we moved to Denver. It was there that I got to network with other talented creatives and I ended up getting publications in 3 magazines such as Malvie and Pump Magazine. I decided I wanted to create an umbrella for all things beauty. I got my Esthetics license from Westland Beauty Academy and got certified from Borboleta to do Lash Extensions.
Finally, I can tell you why I decided to plant roots in Austin. This story comes full circle because my best friend that I met at MAC Cosmetics called me to tell me she decided to open a Cosmetic Studio in Austin. If you haven’t already heard of Kenzie Fresh Brows, that’s her! It was perfect timing in my career because I wanted to move closer to home and I have always wanted to be my own boss. I now work at Fresh Cosmetic Studio offering Lash Extensions, Brow Laminations, and Lash Lifts as well as being a freelance makeup artist.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There have definitely been bumps along the way. I always had to start from the bottom throughout my entire journey. Moving across the country several times and starting from scratch was both a blessing and a struggle. I paid my way through Esthetics school by cashing in my 401k with MAC but it was genuinely the only time I felt that going to school felt right. Moving to Austin has by far been the scariest thing I’ve done because this is the first time I’ve dove into having my own business. Not knowing if I will be fully booked or have one client for the week is terrifying. After working for corporations most of my adult life, I had to let my happiness outweigh the risk of having my own business. At the end of the day, if it isn’t scary, it’s not worth it to me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business is Gabby Fisher Artistry and I am located at Fresh Cosmetic Studio in North Central Austin. I offer lash extensions, brow laminations, and lash lifts as well as specializing in colored lashes. I am an independent makeup artist specializing in editorial and bridal on location services.
I strive to make every person regardless of ethnicity, gender, or age comfortable and welcome while making them feel beautiful. I’ve been asked by models if they need to bring their own foundation to a photoshoot in fear of getting their skin tone wrong from bad experiences. I have every color in my makeup kit at all times because it’s important to me that as a makeup artist, I can work on every single skin tone.
I am proud to work at Fresh Cosmetic Studio because we have created a safe space for everyone.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I think that everything in life is a risk. I’ve learned so much from being a “risk taker” and I don’t regret any of it. My fear lies more in not taking the risk and never knowing if I could have succeeded. In my opinion, success always has a story of rejection behind it but the resilience to keep going until you’ve made it.
