Inspiring Conversations with Hannah Eubank & Cat Van Der Westhuizen of Austin Relational Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Eubank & Cat Van Der Westhuizen

Hi Hannah Eubank & Cat van der Westhuizen, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We met in graduate school at Texas State University and completed our internship together, conducting workshops and couples counseling. Over the years, we had some really great colleagues and mentors who helped us see the value of creating our own space to practice in a way that resonated with the clients we felt most connected to. Together, we began to dream of creating a group therapy practice and set the ball in motion when we worked with our friend, mentor, and fellow therapist, Colleen Winter, to build Austin Relational Wellness, a practice centered on relationships.

Relationships have always been at the heart of our work. As group practice owners and therapists, we are committed to fostering strong relationships with one another, our therapist community, and the therapists at Austin Relational Wellness. Most importantly, we help the couples and individuals we work with to cultivate healthy, lasting relationships.

Over the years, we have expanded and welcomed some excellent clinicians to our team. In fact, we have recently expanded to a new office space, and we hope this new space brings even more opportunities to connect with our clients and provide a welcoming and comfortable environment for therapy. We are excited about the future and the continued growth of Austin Relational Wellness as we strive to make a positive impact on the lives of individuals and couples in our community.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The process of starting and growing our therapy group has primarily been a fun experience. We both love the building phases of a project, such as designing the website, decorating our office space, and different marketing tactics.

The biggest challenge for our practice was responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and shutdown. Overnight, we went from a solely in-person therapy practice where we saw each other daily at the office to offering only online telehealth appointments from home with no end date in sight. In addition to the shift in location, the pandemic brought many couples and families to a crisis point, and our inquiries for therapy were through the roof, resulting in a waitlist.

This demand for couples therapy allowed us to experience significant growth in the summer of 2021. We welcomed our first therapy associate to our team and expanded our group. We operated as a virtual-only practice until the summer of 2022, when we made the decision to return to a physical office and offer in-person sessions. We’re excited to have moved to our new office suite and to lay roots down in South Austin.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Although Austin is a fairly large city, it still has a small-town feel to us. We enjoy the easy access to nature in the Hill Country, such as Texas rivers, lakes, and state parks. It’s also a plus that the community supports mental health awareness.

We wouldn’t be Austinites if we didn’t complain about the rapid growth and how it affects traffic! Long commute times can impact our client’s ability to make it to their sessions and get back to work on time. Having the option of online therapy sessions has made it easier to accommodate folks regardless of their location.
