Inspiring Conversations with Jacob Yacoub of Jacob’s Liquor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Yacoub.

Hi Jacob, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’m an engineer with 15 years in the oil and gas sector. I moved from Qatar in 2018 (where I used to work) to open my own business in Austin. Initially, I was trying to figure out what type of business. The liquor business was tempting, with shorter hours and a more relaxing retail business. It was supposed to be a temporary deal to add something else, either pen up another location or add a corporate job. Then covid hit, liquor business went up like never before, and that distracted me from other plans. The liquor business has re-balanced right now but is still strong.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
We did a great job with competitive prices, excellent customer service, and a nice store like no other liquor business. However, competition is fierce with the big boys (i.e., Specs, Total Wine)

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Jacob’s Liquor?
Competitive prices, convenient location, great staff/best customer service/we get many compliments on the inside finishing (wood shelves, wall colors, etc.). Running a successful liquor store requires that you stay on top of trends, offer unique products, organize events and tastings, create a loyalty club, offer a selection of amazing products, and encourage impulse purchases. Most importantly, it is essential to comply with the various regulations regarding selling alcoholic products in your state not to lose your license.

Sampling/Tasting: In-store announcements leading up to the event can be a great way to keep customers in the know. Putting up flyers can help reinforce the message. Many liquor store shoppers would only consider themselves experts in pairing food items with their favorite wine or cocktail. Offering samples of potential pairings allows customers to learn about the available offerings.
