Inspiring Conversations with Jermaine Mason of The Blade Barbershop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jermaine Mason.

Hi Jermaine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The birth of The Blade Barbershop occurred while I was getting a haircut at a particular barbershop in Texas. An older gentlemen had entered the shop with what looked like his grandson, sat down and begin reading his bible. He actually reminded me of my father who was a pastor for over 25 years. At the time, the music was loud and vulgar and it was obvious the gentleman was offended. He politely asked, “Hey guys can you change the music?” I heard one of the barbers say, under his breath, “if you don’t like it, you don’t have to be here.” It was at that moment I said to myself, “I’m building my own shop!” I am not a barber, but I know customer service and my vision is centered on excellent customer service, inclusion and quality experience. Additionally, I wanted to create a space where the barbers felt like they were being invested in as well. The Blade Barbershop is a safe, professional and relaxing environment that serves all people. I am blessed to have five of the best barbers in Texas with awesome clients.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
This has been an awesome journey and I have learned and continue to learn everyday. One great thing about building something yourself is that your passion does not allow you to see it as work. There have been moments during the building phase that seemed challenging but never hard enough for me to consider quitting. When things are meant to be, things seem to just fall in place.

The Blade Barbershop is an inclusive, luxury barbershop where we place customer experience as our top priority. Customer experience begins when you walk in and are greeted by our professional staff. Keep in mind that customer experience also includes safety, respect and exceeding our customer’s expectations. You should also know that as the owner, I’m not a barber. I think what sets us apart is attention to detail we give our clients. We have customized names for grooming services like The Judge, The Commissioner, The Governor and The Senator, just to name a few. The reason for these names is because I want there to be different-level conversations that happen when you visit. I want others to connect and have conversations that add value to your life. Your next great opportunity may be one “Blade conversation” away!

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I think when preparation meets opportunity, you are able to achieve any dream you have. When I first had the idea of the shop, a good friend of mine who previously owned and operated a successful business made me write a business plan. I had no idea how to do this, but I researched and stayed up late putting in the work so that I understood the potential areas of risk. I hand-selected barbers who displayed the right character for The Blade. Although we were able to become profitable in our second year, it’s not about the money for me. I’m lucky to have the team I have.
