Inspiring Conversations with Joseph Rayner of QOL Health & Performance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Rayner.

Hi Joseph, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey as a Physical Therapist (PT) started when I was 13 years old. I had just read my first strength and conditioning book and knew right then and there that I wanted to have the knowledge to be able to help people become their best selves. The book was written by a PT, and from then on I decided I would do whatever it took to enter the profession. The rest was history.

Fast forward 12 years from then, here I am finally living the dream in a sports medicine clinic, but something didn’t feel right. I would find myself seeing as high as 25 patients a day, leaving very little time to build relationships and address all of the concerns of the patients I was working with. Much of the work I was doing felt robotic during the busiest of times, as I was just trying to keep up with the pace. The final straw moment I had experienced was when I became a patient myself.

Long story short, I was misdiagnosed by my primary care provider (PCP), which eventually led me to admit myself to an emergency room. After numerous diagnostic tests, over $34,000 worth of medical services later, I was eventually told I had experienced my first anxiety attack. What a disappointing outcome. Worse is that it could’ve been prevented if my PCP had spent more time getting to know me and my situation. However, they were too busy that day to be able to give the time needed. I eventually reflected on this and asked myself, how many people have sought help from me and experienced something similar because I was not able to take the time to get to know them better? I knew deep down that there had to be a way to provide better quality of care and for me as a clinician, to play a more fulfilling role in our healthcare system.

This led me leaving my dream job and to take the leap of faith of starting my own business called QOL Health & Performance PLLC.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, as I’ve had to really push my comfort zone to accomplish what I am pursuing. From learning how to develop a website to learning all of the business legalities there are, to learning how to market to people as a new business with new ideas; it’s been quite a challenge. I’m also creating innovations that will address issues in our vastly complex healthcare system, and so of course creating something new comes with its challenges. However, I will say that it has been immensely satisfying to take all of this on, and I’ve grown rapidly in a short span of time because of these experiences.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
QOL Health & Performance PLLC is currently a virtual sports physical therapy company that utilizes an innovative value-based care system. To put it plainly, we’ve created an algorithm that allows us to provide better outcomes at reduced costs in order to provide more value to our patients. We use this calculation to provide a ranking system for our providers, that way patients can see which provider is best capable of treating their specific condition(s).

To accomplish this, we offer bundled packages for the services provided, and we measure your overall quality of life (hence the name QOL). That way, the patient knows that they will be spending X amount of money for Y amount of time, instead of being left in the dark, until the bills arrive weeks later, and you’re still left wondering when your rehab will end. This will also allow you to communicate with your provider at any time during the week, instead of having to wait for your next appointment to receive help; maximizing your outcomes as a result. In order for us to offer all of this, we are unable to accept insurance at this time however due to the minimal costs of running the company using telehealth, we are able to offer these services at affordable rates never seen before. Also, all initial consultations are free of charge to ensure our services are right for you!

QOL Health & Performance PLLC is currently best suited for those that are wanting to figure out how they can continue or return to training while experiencing minor to moderate injuries (ex. muscle strains, ligament sprains, etc.), overuse injuries (ex. tennis elbow, Achilles tendinitis, stress fractures, etc.), and chronic pain conditions (ex. low back pain, neck pain, etc.) These conditions do not require hands on treatment, and so they can be managed with the convenience of telehealth.

I am most proud of our ability to improve many weak points in our current healthcare system, such as reducing medical costs, reducing medical waste, providing the ability to expand research opportunities, providing care throughout the patient’s journey, and improving patient empowerment. I am also incredibly excited at future opportunities of expanding our services and impacting other disciplines in healthcare in order to allow a larger number of people to benefit from this system.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something that most people don’t know about me is that I am an athlete who deals with chronic shoulder and knee pain. My shoulder pain comes from injuries of the labrum of my shoulder and my knee pain comes from Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease. However, over the years I’ve learned how to overcome my conditions without the need of surgery, and I am able to enjoy playing sports to this day!

QOL Health & Performance PLLC has two different community service initiatives. The first is community day, where patients who are uninsured and are unable to afford our services can apply to earn free services. The second is project empower, where we will be hosting workshops and events for local underserved youth/adolescents to learn about the health/fitness professions and to receive mentorship on how to enter these fields.

The logo of the company represents a paradigm of how I view the qualities of a healthcare system. The corners of the triangle represents costs, quality of care, and accessibility.
