Inspiring Conversations with Mariah Sage of Easeful Mama

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Sage.

Hi Mariah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Most moms will agree that parenting is the hardest and best job in the world. Although being a parent will never be EASY, I believe that it can be more easeful.

Society has fed us the idea that being a great mother means being exhausted, stressed & overwhelmed, and ALWAYS putting the kids first. But after over a decade of working with families and studying the psychology of a great family system, what I’ve seen is that most moms naturally put their kids first.

I’ve been working with kids and families my whole life – leading seminars, working as a nanny and household manager, working in daycares and schools, and coaching families for over five years to set up household systems and improve family dynamics and relationships with their kids.

I started doing this work long before a family of my own was even on the horizon, and when the time came to finally start planning my own family, I looked around me and I didn’t see a model of motherhood that looked appealing to me.

I saw a culture of moms who simply accept the fact that “losing yourself” was part of motherhood. And who had been conditioned to wear their exhaustion and self-sacrifice as a badge of honor.

As my partner and I prepare to start our own family, I’ve shifted the focus of my work from simply teaching tools and strategies to help parents with behavioral concerns or improve family dynamics to a focus on how to actually have the family you want AND be the person you want to be.

I’ve seen through years of firsthand experience with families that it is possible to set up a life full of intention where you get to have the career or purpose you want, have social life and feel like yourself, and still be an amazing, conscious, and present parent.

So today, this is what I help parents do. I coach families to set up systems that support them, to parent in alignment with their unique values (not a pre-designed parenting style), to be cared for so they can give to their children from a place of fullness, and to raise close, connected families with happy and well-adjusted kids.

In the process, we clear up behavioral concerns, get your days running smoothly, and reduce your parenting stress. But it’s actually so much deeper than that. It’s about creating your family culture.

I’ve worked hard to design my own life in a way that gives me the space to live on my own rhythm. Where I can have my business and do what I love, keep my marriage strong, have fun and fulfillment, and raise my future kids the way I want to. And I believe this is possible for every single family.

No one prepares us for parenthood in this culture. At best, we take the good from our childhoods and find a way to sort through the noise and opinions of everyone in the world to find a parenting style that works for us. At worst, we feel like we lose our identity and spend our days overwhelmed and exhausted. A new paradigm of parenting is possible, and I’m making it my mission to live it and to help others find their unique version of it so we can raise happy kids with fulfilled parents.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned so far in my business is that when I’m living in alignment with my values, everything flows much more easily. But it took me a long time to figure out how to do this in a practical way. I would describe my first few years of working for myself as a lot of trial and error. Learning about how I wanted to serve, about how to course correct when something isn’t working, and about balancing the many tasks of running your own business with having the life I want.

I’ve gotten where I am today by being willing to be flexible and not giving up while the vision of what I really want to build has become clear to me. It’s also taken a lot of accepting that my version of entrepreneurship, parenthood and so many other things won’t look like a lot of people around me, and that’s ok.

Although there have been plenty of times when I’ve felt lost or defeated on this journey, I’ve never wanted to give up on the work because I love it and believe in it so deeply. The feeling I get when I help a family and see their lives change makes every single day worth it. I believe that when we heal families, we heal the world. Most of our deepest trauma and wounding comes from our family – but this is just because parents don’t have the tools they need. Every parent does their best with what they have. And that’s my mission with my work. To help more parents have the education and support to be the parents they want to be and raise amazing kids who grow into amazing people.

We’ve been impressed with Easeful Mama, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Easeful Mama is all about helping parents create a family life that is aligned with their values and the way they want to raise their kids, without giving up the lives or their purpose. It’s about being the parent you want to be AND living the life you want to live.

Parenting in today’s world can feel like an ongoing practice of trying to sort through all of the well-meaning advice, input, and research – while just trying to get through the day-to-day and figure out what will work with your kids.

I coach parents (and even kids when they are old enough) to get clear on their family values and vision, create clear systems that support them to reduce breakdowns and behavioral concerns, and parent in a way that works for them. My work isn’t about one type of parenting style. It’s just about being the most conscious, present parent you can be and raising your kids in a way that really works for you.

One of the ways I do this is by helping parents learn tools and systems for keeping open communication with their kids and setting up positive discipline and boundaries. We also work on healing connections with kids who feel distant or who are acting out, adding in schedules and routines that work, getting kids to take on more responsibility, and handling practical breakdowns like bedtimes and homework battles.

Those are the surface-level solutions, but the result is a deep healing and a family system that can grow with your family.

I’ve worked with families from around the world with all different kinds of parenting styles. I take a no-judgment approach and I consider it my role to help guide you back to your own inner knowing about how to raise your kids. Yes, I bring practical tools and solutions, but I’m not here to tell you how you should raise your kids.

You are the expert on your own family, but if you’re like most of us, you never went to school to learn how to raise a family! With the right guidance, you can actually enjoy the parenting process and be the parent you want to be.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is that we create a world where parents don’t feel lost, embarrassed, or ashamed when they are struggling with their kids. Where there are resources available to help parents without judgment so they can raise great kids.

Every parent does their best with the tools they have, but our culture tends to over deliver advice and opinions and underdeliver actual support for parents.

The way you be the parent you want to be and raise well-adjusted kids is to be supported and cared for yourself so you can give from a place of fullness.
