Today we’d like to introduce you to Martelle Luedecke.
Hi Martelle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Rooted in Legacy, Growing in Purpose
When your family helped settle Travis County in 1831, deep roots come with the territory. For me, those roots have always meant a sense of belonging, resilience, and commitment to community. My life has been shaped by those same values — a mix of heritage, hard work, and hope that I try to carry into everything I do.
I was raised in a family whose story runs right alongside the story of Austin itself. I’ve always loved helping people, working with numbers, and finding beauty in the world — interests that led me down two paths that might seem different, but really share the same foundation: accessibility and photography.
In November 2019, I joined Development Associates of Texas / Texas Accessibility Experts, where I work alongside my longtime friend and mentor, Mark Robinson, Principal Registered Accessibility Specialist (RAS). My degree is in Psychology and Biology, but becoming a Registered Accessibility Specialist required four years of field experience and a lot of hands-on learning. Under Mark’s mentorship, I gained a deep understanding of the Texas Accessibility Standards and the intricacies of design compliance. Earning my RAS certification was another test — literally. I had to first pass the IBC National Building Code exam before I was even eligible to take the RAS exam. Both required dedication, study, and plenty of late nights, but the reward was worth it.
As an accessibility specialist, I genuinely enjoy the challenge of what I do. Sometimes when the phone rings or an email comes in, it feels like a continuous pop quiz — you never know what question or scenario will be waiting. Each project is a puzzle to solve, and I love finding solutions that make spaces usable and welcoming for everyone. The work calls for patience, precision, and a good dose of people skills — and I’m grateful to do something that combines all three.
Our projects at Development Associates range from university campuses and corporate facilities like Tesla and Samsung to city infrastructure, schools, and parks. No two jobs are ever the same, which keeps things interesting. I value being part of a team that helps owners, designers, and engineers create environments that are safe, functional, and accessible to all.
Outside of work, my proudest role has always been being a mom. As a single mother of three, I’ve weathered my share of challenges, but those years taught me perseverance, faith, and gratitude. Now that my kids are grown, I share my days with my two Malinois, Mötley and Terra.
Another milestone that means a great deal to me is celebrating 18 years of continuous sobriety this November 27th. For me, that date isn’t just about recovery — it’s about renewal and grace. It’s a reminder that true success isn’t found in titles or awards, but in the courage to keep moving forward, one day at a time.
Photography has always been one of my greatest joys. Through Luedecke Photography, I’ve had the privilege of capturing the spirit of the Highland Lakes/Hill Country — from the laughter of community events to the quiet beauty of small-town life. Over the years, I’ve been honored to receive recognition such as Volunteer of the Year seven times and awards for Best Photography Service (2019–2025) and Readers’ Choice Gold (2023–2025). While I’m deeply grateful for those acknowledgments, what matters most to me is knowing that my work helps preserve local memories and celebrates the people and places that make this area so special.
I also continue a family tradition that’s close to my heart — a biweekly gardening column I’ve written with my dad for the past nine years. He started it over 25 years ago, and now I have the joy of carrying it forward with him, sharing our love for the land and a few lessons learned along the way with readers across 14 newspapers.
Through it all, I’ve learned that deep roots — when they’re nourished by faith, purpose, and courage — can weather just about anything and still find a way to bloom.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In this field, there’s no shortage of competition. What sets Mark and me apart is our commitment to exceptional customer service, technical knowledge, and consistency. For instance, we understand that accessibility compliance doesn’t pause for the holidays—someone is always building somewhere. That’s why Mark and I stagger our time off so that one of us is always available to answer calls or emails. Whether a client needs to confirm a ramp slope, check the appropriate size for a landing, or ensure they’re ready to open for the New Year, we make sure one of us is on deck to help keep their project moving forward.
We’ve been impressed with Development Associates of Texas, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Founded in 1997, Development Associates of Texas, Inc. was established in response to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation’s (TDLR) enforcement of the Texas Accessibility Standards (TAS) passed in 1994. Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
There is no such thing as luck. There’s perseverance and hard work. The biologist in me would say causation or correlation. The Christian in me has Faith since God’s got my six.
