Inspiring Conversations with Megan Brown of No Rules Nourishment, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Brown.

Hi Megan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Functional health coaching isn’t the career I set out for. I was a journalism major dreaming of a byline in a health magazine—writing about wellness, not living it out as a practitioner. But a rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis in my twenties sent me searching for answers that conventional care couldn’t give me.

I read Andrew Weil’s book Spontaneous Healing and felt like I’d uncovered an underground world of healing no one was talking about. It turned on a light I couldn’t turn off—I had to learn more. So in 2010 I enrolled at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York. What began as learning for myself quickly grew into helping family and friends. Soon I was hearing from others navigating their own autoimmune struggles, and I knew I needed deeper training to truly help.

That led me to the School of Applied Functional Medicine, where I became a certified functional medicine practitioner. It gave me the ability to go beyond general nutrition and into true detective work—uncovering root causes, seeing how body systems connect, and creating personalized strategies as unique as the clients I help. Motherhood sharpened it all, challenging me to master the art of ten-minute meals, kid-friendly swaps, and the importance of making wellness simple and doable.

Today, through my practice, No Rules Nourishment, I help people—primarily women, but men too—who are exhausted, dismissed, and tired of hearing ‘you’re fine’ when they know they’re not. I help them uncover the same kind of answers I once went searching for myself, so they can reclaim their energy and finally feel like themselves again—without getting lost in a maze of rules or restrictions.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Funny, you know, one thing I often tell clients is healing isn’t a straight path. There’s twists and turns, stops and starts, sometimes you go backwards to go forwards. The same can be said for doing this work. Functional medicine is a field that demands constant learning—reading the latest research, reviewing cases, and staying on the cutting edge so you can truly help your clients. I’ve figured out over the years I like keeping a small, high-touch practice so I can deeply serve each person I work with, which means I’m often thinking about what might help them even when we’re not in session.

The challenge is balancing all of that with my own health and life—basically, practicing what I preach. I remind my clients to prioritize rest, nourishment, connection, and play, and I have to remind myself the same. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the work, but if I’m not leading by example, then what am I even doing? I now see my own self-care as part of the job.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
No Rules Nourishment, LLC is a functional medicine health coaching practice for people who are exhausted, dealing with chronic pain, or stuck in the cycle of being told “you’re fine” when they know they’re not. I help them finally uncover the real answers behind what’s going on in their bodies—so they can get back to feeling like themselves again.

No Rules Nourishment means making health a choice, never a rule. It’s about healing through nourishment, not deprivation. It’s about leaving behind the “rules” we’ve been handed from diet culture turned wellness culture—and instead focusing on adding in more of the good, listening to your body, and trusting yourself as the authority on what’s healthy for you.

What sets my work apart is the blend: one part root-cause investigation, one part ancient healing wisdom, and one part practical, real-life coaching. My toolbox includes things like hair mineral analysis and other functional assessments to uncover the hidden imbalances driving symptoms, then turning those insights into changes that truly fit a client’s life. Because lasting health doesn’t come from another rulebook—it comes from freedom, intuition, and a personalized plan that works in the real world.

No Rules Nourishment isn’t just a practice—it’s a philosophy. Clients may come in looking for relief from symptoms, but what they walk away with is far more powerful: the tools, clarity, and confidence to take back control of their health and their lives.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
As a mom, a practitioner, and someone who’s been in the trenches with her own health, I know how overwhelming it can be. What I’ve found is healing doesn’t require perfection. Real change happens when you stop chasing rules and start building small rhythms—little shifts, done consistently, that create a big impact over time.

And just because your symptoms don’t fit neatly into a box with a label doesn’t mean they should be dismissed—and it doesn’t mean there aren’t answers out there for you. If I’ve learned anything, it’s this: you know your body better than anyone else. If you’re not getting answers in one place, keep looking. There are so many forms of medicine, so many different approaches to healing, and there isn’t one “right” way. The key is finding what resonates with you, makes sense for you, and—this part is vital—what you believe can work for you.

A diagnosis is just a label for a cluster of symptoms. It rarely explains why those symptoms are happening. A functional medicine approach means being the detective that keeps asking “why”—peeling back the layers and connecting the dots. I think of it like trying to untangle a knot in a necklace: if you only tug at one loop, it gets tighter. But if you slow down, look closely, and work at each strand, the whole knot eventually loosens and comes free. That’s how we get to the root of your health challenges—not by pulling harder, but by finding the right threads to release what’s been holding you back.
