Inspiring Conversations with Nikki Dunn of She Talks Finance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Dunn.

Hi Nikki, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Where I am today stemmed from my childhood. I grew up watching kids get off of the bus stop in “rich kid neighborhoods”, wondering why their parents had money and mine didn’t. Then, I watched my parents divorce and go bankrupt over money problems.

So, I’ve basically always had an interest in money and chasing success to avoid the big money mistakes I’ve seen made.

I worked in the insurance business for a while which I thought would be the start of my “climbing the corporate America ladder” success story. I couldn’t wait to get working in corporate America full-time. I had already started in the business during college part-time.

I came home crying all of the time though because I hated it, and I had a feeling that I wasn’t fulfilling my full potential.

I received an opportunity to manage a small business in the finance space, and that’s when everything changed for me. I learned all about entrepreneurship, marketing, the stock market and financial planning. I eventually went on to become a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional.

The more I learned about investing and financial planning, the more I realized how most people lack the knowledge they need to feel good about their money. Women especially were an extremely underserved market in finance and knew a lot less about investing on average.

I also particularly found working with freelancers and business owners some of my favorite work. There is a lot about owning a business that you have to learn on your own!

So, it was time to turn my passion for financial literacy into a reality. I started a financial education company called She Talks Finance. My mission is to help people learn how to manage their money better and get invested since this stuff isn’t taught in school!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road.

As an entrepreneur, I was dealing with inconsistent income, and sometimes, no income at all! Drawing down on savings while you work your tail off to make something is tough.

One of the hardest things in the finance space in particular, was being a woman in a man’s world.

For one, I was afraid to ask questions because I didn’t want to sound “stupid”. So, I learned things a bit slower due to this fear.

I also felt like I had to prove myself more. Fortunately, those times are changing and women are becoming a larger part of the finance and investing world.

We’ve been impressed with She Talks Finance, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
She Talks Finance is an educational platform to increase financial literacy among everyone, especially women.

A lot of people who are working professionals or business owners would tell me all of the time, “Nikki, I don’t know what to do with my money.”

The issue for many people is that professional help is expensive. It can be thousands of dollars to get a custom financial plan made, and hourly fees run anywhere from $250-450/hr.

And for most people, they just need to learn the basics and they can achieve great things with their money!

I wanted to take all of my knowledge as a financial planner and put it into a comprehensive and easy to understand training program that was more affordable than hiring a financial professional. People can actually create a financial plan for themselves and learn how to invest step-by-step.

I also put out free content on my YouTube channel.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I think financial education is going to become way more fun and interesting! Financial literacy is a growing trend right now.

I myself am trying to put out engaging content on social platforms that draws people in or make them want to learn more about things like investing.

I also think content from finance professionals will be more accessible as more investment advisors and financial planners have to use social media to attract clients.

I find this as a plus for everyone. You want people who are actually in the industry or that have designations putting out finance content!
