Inspiring Conversations with Sam Pauly of Bison Cove Ranch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Pauly.

Hi Sam, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My parents have had bison as long as I have been alive so over 30 years. After years of hard work and careful planning I was able to afford a small ranch in my hometown. From there I began setting the land up to accommodate Bison. Which included clearing overgrown juniper, planting and encouraging native plant growth just to name a few of the regenerative methods we used. Then came the Bison, which also helped us in our regenerative goals.
Where the land was once overgrown with “cedar”, erosion stricken, and rocky is now growing grass, retaining soil, and thriving.
We now have a healthy herd on healing lands.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning a business is never smooth, and owning a bison business definitely has its challenges. However, we feel we do a fairly good job.
Some of the challenges we face are environmental, like droughts. We had trouble in the past finding a proper processing facility that could handle bison or were even willing to accept them. Another big struggle is awareness. Some people in Texas do not even realize bison meat is available, and very nutritious.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Bison Cove Ranch?
We are a small local producer right outside of Georgetown in Lometa. Our ranch is dedicated to raising bison on a diet as close as we can to their natural native diet.
You could say we specialize in handling, transport, meat sales/production, behaviorism and overall wellbeing of the bison.
We raise 100% grass fed bison, use regenerative farming methods to help steer the ranch toward a heathy natural ecosystem.
We are most proud of the bison we raise, the excellent meat they produce, and how we have helped restore the land we and the bison live on. All with the help from the bison, family, and friends.

We offer ranch consulting, live bison sales, as well as bison meat sales direct to consumers or even wholesale to establishments as our meat has the USDA stamp of approval.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I don’t think I take unreasonable risks. However, I do believe it is necessary to take risks in order to achieve some goals.

You take major risks anytime you are around live animals, especially large ones. Myself as well as my ranch manger have both been injured working with bison.

Just owning animals is a major financial. Add the business factor behind that with the live bison and meat sales and you are already up to your ears in risk.
