Inspiring Conversations with Skyler Tanner of Smart Strength Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skyler Tanner.

Hi Skyler, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
A wise mentor started me in personal training at the age of 16, leading eventually to Austin in 2004. The genesis of our business is personal: my father has always been handicapped and I saw firsthand how a single non-functioning joint can severely affect confidence and quality of life, and my mother died of cancer before her 48th birthday, commenting to me in the last workout I put her through: “I miss a body that can do whatever I want and not feel wiped out.”

Professionally, we differentiate through education and experience. The fitness industry is filled with attractive people who find their identity in the gym, but rarely have a formal education. Like a physical therapist or occupational therapist, our team of exercise physiologists have degrees in exercise science and demands on their continuing education. You’re a professional; shouldn’t your trainer be as well?

This combination of experience, expertise, and time-efficiency means we tend to have people for many years. The data is clear: less than 20% of North Americans lift weights, citing lack of expertise and accountability. Our team solves that problem: our team of experienced exercise physiologists design the workouts, based on the most current science, so you don’t have to think or decide. You just show up and do the work.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Certainly getting through 2020 was a challenge, as we pivoted to a virtual training model that we still use when clients are on the road or taking a summer trips in cooler places. Finding people who take the profession of training, and the opportunity to work with clients for years and years, provides a unique challenge in a landscape of quick fixes and “12 week challenges” (hint: there is no 12 week fix when you have the rest of your life ahead of you!). That said, we’ve grown steadily year over year and continue to focus on what matters most: helping the client in front of you achieve a level of strength they could not have imagined for everything else they value and would rather be doing, all in only 1 hour per week.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Smart Strength Austin?
“Hey I want to feel weaker and out of breath more often!” – said no one ever. At Smart Strength our team of exercise physiologists help you look better, feel better, and perform better in an hour a week. You’ve got time for that, right?

We specialize in evidence-based, time-efficient strength training workouts for CEOs, Supermoms, and retirees. Strength is the currency you live your life by, so we prioritize developing strength in a joint-friendly fashion so that our clients can use that strength in everything else they’d rather be doing.

How do you define success?
Professionally: seeing my clients succeed and live their values in a body that they would not have thought capable of such strength and resilience, while also being the avatar for what we teach and deliver. Personally: the fact that I get to pick my kids up after school, have dinner with my family, and do all of the things I’d rather be doing with the strength I’ve built over the long term at Smart Strength is how I define success.
