Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Hayes.
Hi Steve, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I founded Hayes Builders in 2016 with the idea to build greener, cleaner, healthier homes while preserving the unique culture and identity that makes Austin great (and keeps Austin weird).
Prior to founding Hayes Builders, I served as a Division President for both a public and private national homebuilding company which has allowed me to have an understanding of the different challenges and end-game goals of both types of businesses.
I spent many years at production builder MHI Homebuilders. There I spearheaded a program that was able to get all new homes in the Austin, Dallas and San Antonio markets LEED certification.
Today, our homes mix traditional and modern designs in neighborhoods from Barton Hills and Zilker to South Manchaca. But it is our reputation for pushing the envelope on environmental sustainability and consumer innovations that makes our business stand out. Since 2018, we’ve ranked among the Austin area’s 25 busiest custom builders and we were named Austin Business Journal’s 2021 Custom Builder of the Year.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Over the past five years, land values in central Austin have increased dramatically and the market to purchase land for new projects has become tighter.
Additionally, over the past year, we’ve seen the effects of Covid-19 create demand for more space within homes for homeschooling and work-from-home solutions.
