Today we’d like to introduce you to Xenia Kempf.
Hi Xenia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Hungary, and my first degree was actually in economics from Budapest Business School. Life took an unexpected but beautiful turn when I immigrated to the United States in 2010 to be with my husband. Shortly after arriving, I realized I wanted a career that felt more meaningful and connected to people, so I went back to school for nursing shortly after arriving to the U.S. I worked as an ICU nurse for years, then I became a nurse practitioner in 2019, and that set the foundation for everything I do now.
In my early years as an NP, I worked in traditional medical settings where the focus was often on symptom management — quick visits, quick fixes, and prescriptions that didn’t really solve the root problem. I kept seeing patients who were struggling with gut issues, hormonal chaos, chronic fatigue, inflammation, anxiety, and symptoms that didn’t fit neatly into standard diagnostic boxes. They were told their labs were “normal,” yet they still felt unwell.
That pushed me to look deeper. I began studying integrative and functional medicine, advanced gut health, mold toxicity, genetics, metabolic health, hormones, and psychiatry. The more training I completed, the clearer it became that patients needed more time, more answers, and more comprehensive support than the traditional model allowed.
That’s what led me to open Your Functional Health in Austin, a virtual functional medicine clinic helping people across Texas get real, root-cause care. Today I specialize in complex conditions like mold toxicity, gut dysfunction, thyroid disorders, perimenopause and menopause, metabolic issues, and chronic inflammation. I’ve also expanded into functional psychiatry, which allows me to bridge biology, hormones, neurochemistry, lifestyle, and trauma-informed care to support mental health in a truly integrative way.
It’s been a rewarding journey — from Hungary, to economics, to nursing, to building a practice where patients finally feel heard and supported. And I feel like I’m still just getting started.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road definitely hasn’t been smooth. immigrating to the U.S. was my first major challenge. My visa application was lost by the government after being “pending” for six months, and my husband eventually had to get help from state representatives in Colorado just to track it down. After almost ten months of waiting, they finally found my paperwork and I was able to join him. That experience taught me patience, resilience, and how determined you sometimes have to be to build the life you want.
Nursing school was another huge hurdle — it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I worked full time while going through school because I wanted to pay off my loans as quickly as possible. It was exhausting, but worth every minute, and I’m grateful to be completely student-loan–free today.
And building my own functional medicine practice has been its own journey. It’s incredibly rewarding, but it isn’t easy doing everything yourself — from the clinical work to the business operations to the marketing. I’m still learning every single day. My dream is to eventually open a brick-and-mortar clinic so I can see patients face-to-face, create a healing space, and expand the services I offer.
The challenges along the way have shaped who I am as a clinician. They taught me grit, empathy, and the importance of creating a practice where patients feel seen and supported — because I know firsthand how hard the path to healing and growth can be.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Your Functional Health?
Your Functional Health in Austin is a virtual functional medicine and functional psychiatry practice serving patients throughout Texas. I focus on truly getting to the root cause of complex issues — gut problems, mold toxicity, hormone imbalances, thyroid disorders, metabolic challenges, and chronic anxiety or mood symptoms that haven’t improved with conventional care.
What sets my practice apart is the level of thoroughness and personalization. I use advanced functional labs, detailed health histories, genetics, and nervous-system support to build individualized plans that actually explain why someone feels unwell and how we can restore balance. Nothing is rushed or one-size-fits-all.
I’m especially known for helping patients who have been dismissed elsewhere or told “everything looks normal” despite still feeling sick. Brand-wise, I’m proud that my practice is known for compassionate, evidence-informed, root-cause medicine that gives people real answers and long-term solutions — not quick fixes.
What I want readers to know is that my goal is simple: to help people feel like themselves again through care that is modern, personalized, and deeply supportive.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I’m a big believer in continuous learning, both for my patients and myself. There are several resources that really help me stay sharp, inspired, and grounded — both in my work and in my personal life.
For podcasts, I love The Dr. Hyman Show, The DUTCH Podcast, The Drive by Peter Attia, UnPaused by Dr. Mary Claire Haver, Psych Rounds, Hello Hormones with Dr. Carrie Jones, and Moldfinders by Brian Karr. They each offer something different — from hormone science to mental health, longevity, and environmental health — and they help me bring fresh, evidence-based ideas into my practice.
On the personal side, I’m always inspired by Dr. Brené Brown’s books, which keep me connected to authenticity, leadership, and compassion — values I try to carry into my patient care every day. And for pure enjoyment, I absolutely love Ken Follett’s “Century Trilogy.” It’s not medical at all, but it reminds me of the power of storytelling and history, and it’s one of my favorite escapes.
All of these resources keep me learning, evolving, and staying connected to both the science and the humanity behind the work I do.
