Joshua Parkhurst shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Joshua, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I had the opportunity to get into woodworking and it’s been a great way to stretch my creative muscles in a new way. I began making axe handles which led into blade forging and knife handles, and recently I made a recurve bow out of hickory and I’m now learning how to weld. Doing some of this first thing before getting my work day started is a great way to clear my mind and start off on a high note.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Joshua Parkhurst, owner/founder of Parkhurst Creative Design. I provide graphic design, branding, web design, and online marketing services (such as SEO and Google Ads management). Established as a one-man show in 2007, 18 years later we’re a team of two, and sometimes three. Our unique ideas and being people who find joy in going the extra mile to see our customers succeed is what sets us apart. Creatively tackling the idea of increasing leads while reducing costs is our greatest focus.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Initially I was super chill and freely created things and art whenever and however I could. The world told me I had to be high-strung, stressed, and focus on making money through a standard occupation earned through college. I got more intense and studious, and I graduated with a four-year degree. Then I found how I could be myself and artistically expressive while making a living and providing for my family. Turns out, you don’t need to be who society says you need to be or do it the way they say to do it.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I’ve nearly given up on being a professional artist and working for myself for a living several times. But each time a new opportunity came my way at the eleventh hour that allowed me to continue, and I’m so grateful for each one.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I think my friends would for the most part, all agree that what is most important to me is my wife and 4 boys, my faith, and my dedication to helping others.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Whoa! Let’s see …I would probably stop working towards a retirement fund and start traveling more. I just got back from Wisconsin where I got to see my extended family at their dairy farm and I wish I could do that more often. But if I only had 10 years left to live, I’d stop being as frugal and blow a lot of my earnings on traveling and start working on the road.
