Today we’d like to introduce you to John Conroy.
Hi John, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
A native from upstate NY, I started my career as a model with Elite models in NYC. After 30 plus years as a successful international model, I was led to photography. I have been fortunate to have worked with top clients such as Calvin, Klein, Versace, Men’s Health and to photograph grammy winners such as Carrie Underwood. I moved to Austin ten years ago to continue my career in the entertainment field on both sides of the lens. I am still a model and book catalog and TV commercials. My connections with model and talent agencies have brought upon another exciting business venture I am launching in 2021. I have always been a mentor to new models and actors, so I decided to start my own scouting and talent placement agency and that’s how John Conroy Management got its start.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
This is such a competitive industry, but like anything, I found hard work, patience and thick skin was the perfect combination to succeed. You really have to want this to succeed. It’s not a side hustle or something your friend thinks you should try. It has to come from your gut to take the ups and downs or you will last about a week. Rejection is more of a learning process, then booking the jobs. I have always been represented by the top agents in the country, but I have also been dropped by them if I wasn’t producing or if my look just wasn’t a fit the time. I never took it personally. I just pursued it until I found the right fit. Unfortunately, I find the new talent wants the success to happen for them in the first three months and if it doesn’t they get discouraged or even quit. This is where my 30 plus years come in handy and I can guide them through the rough spots.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
After 35 plus successful years in the modeling and photography business I am fortunate to have created trusted working relationships with the top agencies worldwide. This industry can get such a bad rap with rip off artist and false promises. Luckily, that’s the advantage I have managing the careers of the talent. I have literally been through every scenario this business can throw at you so my words and wisdom come from real experiences.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I feel extremely fortunate to have been raised in a very loving and supportive family. I almost feel guilty because I have too many great memories from family gatherings to friendships I still maintain after 50 years. I had a great balance of love, discipline, encouragement and respect.
