Life & Work with Akilah James

Today we’d like to introduce you to Akilah James

Hi Akilah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always had a deep connection with technology, growing up with my father’s computer store in the 90s. That environment shaped my understanding of tech and its potential. I earned my BSc and MSc in Computer Science, specializing in automation and mathematics, but my creative side kept calling. I spent over a decade as a commercial and runway model, but I knew there was more I could bring to the table.

In 2016, I took a leap and hosted my first fashion show, merging my tech background and love for fashion. This led me to manage models and ultimately launch BOSS [MOVEMENT], where I began exploring fashion tech. The pandemic in 2020 was a turning point for me, pushing me to fully embrace technology in fashion, including 3D printing, AR/VR, and exploring sustainability within carnival design.

Today, I’m proud to say that BOSS [MOVEMENT] is at the forefront of fashion tech in the Caribbean, using cutting-edge tools like 3D printing to create sustainable fashion solutions and pushing boundaries in Trinidad and Tobago’s carnival space. It’s been a journey of blending my tech skills with my passion for creativity, and I’m excited for what’s to come as come back into the Austin TX market with our fashion tech solutions as well.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I’ve learned so much from the challenges. One of the biggest struggles has been access to capital. Since the beginning, I’ve bootstrapped BOSS [MOVEMENT] with my personal savings, which has limited how quickly I could scale. Navigating the fashion tech space as one of the first black women in this field has also had its own unique set of challenges. Convincing investors and clients of the potential in merging fashion with technology, particularly in Trinidad and Tobago, has been a journey in itself.

Another challenge has been pivoting the business model during the pandemic. I had to quickly embrace digital solutions, integrating sustainable fashion tech concepts like 3D printing and AR/VR to keep the business relevant and forward-thinking. But in doing so, I also opened up a whole new set of opportunities, which has pushed me to keep innovating despite the obstacles.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At BOSS [MOVEMENT], we specialize in merging fashion with technology across both Trinidad and Tobago and Austin, TX. Our focus is on integrating 3D printing, AR/VR experiences, and sustainable practices into the fashion industry. We offer services ranging from 3D-printed fashion pieces to tech-driven runway shows, creating innovative ways for designers to incorporate digital tools into their creations.

What sets us apart is our emphasis on sustainability and technology. With 3D printing, for example, we design fashion pieces that can be melted down and repurposed, minimizing waste and promoting a circular economy. Whether it’s for carnival costumes in Trinidad or fashion events in Austin, we’re redefining how fashion and tech can fuse together—making it accessible, innovative, and eco-conscious.

I’m incredibly proud of being one of the pioneers in the Caribbean and Austin to introduce this blend of fashion and technology. Our ALT fashion show in September 2024 was a major milestone, showcasing 3D-printed fashion, virtual fashion experiences, and sustainable design. It sparked excitement in both communities and showed how technology can drive the future of fashion. This forward-thinking approach, combined with our ability to bridge creativity and innovation, truly sets BOSS [MOVEMENT] apart. We’re building a global community that connects fashion tech from Trinidad and Tobago to Austin, TX, and beyond.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned on this journey is the value of adaptability and embracing change. When I first started BOSS [MOVEMENT], the focus was primarily on fashion shows and traditional modeling. However, as technology began to reshape industries, I quickly realized that incorporating fashion tech—such as 3D printing, AR/VR, and sustainable design—was the way forward. This pivot wasn’t easy, but it opened up so many new opportunities.

Another critical lesson is the power of collaboration. By working with local designers, tech experts, and even carnival bands, I’ve seen firsthand how partnerships can elevate your vision and help you tap into new markets. It’s taught me that you don’t have to do it all alone—success often comes from the collective strength of a community.

Lastly, perseverance has been key. There were moments when funding was low, or projects didn’t go as planned, but pushing through those challenges always brought growth. It’s about trusting the process and staying focused on the bigger picture, no matter the obstacles.
