Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Warner.
Hi Caitlin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m a registered nurse turned wedding photographer. I grew up with a camera by my side and was raised by an artist father that taught me photography at a young age. I took documentary photography abroad in Prague while I studied at UT Austin, but for some reason I never considered photography as a future career choice.
One day my friends asked me to take their engagement photos since I was always taking photos for fun. Other couples starting asking me to take their engagement photos and eventually their weddings. My business took off quickly in 2015 as I was working full time as a registered nurse on a Telemetry unit at Seton Hays. Eventually I took on less nursing shifts while I grew my photography business. I have studied film photography at numerous photography workshops and learned to use medium format film as a basis for all of my digital editing. Now I’ve photographed hundreds of weddings and have been internationally published.
My photography is inspired by nature, color, and joy. I strive to create a relaxed and fun experience for my clients. I love to help them feel as comfortable as possible in front of the camera while capturing images that truly reflect their love and personalities. In 2020, one of my photographs was chosen to be on the magazine cover of Brides of Austin and I still can’t believe it!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
In 2020, I was still working nursing shifts PRN (or as needed) two to three times a month in the hospital. I worked with cardiac and stroke patients for 6 years on my unit and I loved it. It was definitely very stressful at times, especially when the pandemic hit. Once weddings started happening again in Texas, I had to choose between nursing and photography since I could not safely do both in 2020. Photography is my true passion, so I made the hard decision to only do wedding photography!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My approach is inspired by a mixture of documentary and fine art photography. I use both film and digital cameras to create a timeless collection of genuine moments. I also base all of my digital editing off of the look of film. This helps achieve an artistic and timeless photography style and is a unique process that I offer to my clients!
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
While I was in college, I was very lucky to be given a full scholarship to UT Austin through the Terry Foundation. I know I could have not afforded to go to such an amazing college otherwise. This helped me start my nursing career which helped me start my photography career for fun without the worries of it failing! I’m forever grateful for the Terry Foundation.
I also had luck when I was awarded a scholarship to study abroad for a documentary photography class, which also helped guide me towards wedding photography!
I am so thankful for all of this luck, my friends and family, and all of my sweet clients that helped bring my business where it is today!
