Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheyenne Morris.
Hi Cheyenne, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Like most photographer origin stories, I wanted a “fancy” camera for the sole purpose of documenting my kids’ childhood. I grew up traveling extensively with my parents and siblings and my Dad documented EVERYTHING. Once I became a parent, I realized just how precious and valuable photographs are. They are tangible representations of memories and seasons of our children’s lives. After I started documenting my own children’s “firsts” and “milestones” I realized that I wanted to be able to bestow those beloved memories and seasons to others. I began photographing lifestyle photos of families and newborns and then also took on branding and commercial clientele.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think it’s ever a smooth road when you start your own business. My Dad always said that nothing worth having comes easy and that has certainly been the truth for my photography business as well. Of course, the beginning of the pandemic made photography a little trickier because you can only get so many great shots while staying 6+ feet away (if people even wanted to be around a masked photographer at all) and newborn photography was basically nonexistent for a while. And then, I’m sure like so many others who start a business, I’ve certainly struggled with imposter syndrome: “am I good enough?” “Would anyone actually pay me to do this?” “Who am I to charge money for what I do” but it really comes down to accepting and sitting in the vulnerability that is putting yourself and your work out there into the world and hoping someone loves it enough to hire you.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in lifestyle family and newborn photography along with branding and commercial photography. I feel like I’m known for making sessions low stress and for making my subjects (whether they’re families, children, models or business owners) feel comfortable in front of the camera when it’s not always a natural setting for many people. I’m most proud of the amount of education that I’ve invested in, with courses, retreats and mentorship’s to expand my knowledge and creativity surrounding photography. It also makes me super proud when I receive a review about how treasured their photos are, how their photos turned out exactly how they had hoped or when a husband tells me how painless a session was, I take those as a personal victory!
How do you think about happiness?
My husband, two girls and two big ol’ goofy dogs are what make me the most happy. They are and will forever be the “why” behind everything I do. Their constant support and love is what I treasure most and I consider myself to be the luckiest to have them in my corner.
