Life & Work with Cynda Green of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynda Green.

Hi Cynda, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into advocacy and family support began when my daughter experienced her first seizure at just six months old. It was one of the most terrifying moments of my life. I had never witnessed a seizure before, and watching my baby go through that left me feeling helpless and overwhelmed. I made the decision to leave my job and dedicate myself full-time to caring for her. There was so much to learn—about doctors, medications, therapies, and navigating a complex healthcare system. As she grew older, additional diagnoses came, each bringing new challenges and lessons.

Seven years later, we welcomed my son, and I continued to stay home to care for both children. Once he began school, I found myself at a crossroads, wondering what my next chapter would look like—one that honored my experiences and allowed me to make a difference.

Through my years as a volunteer with Texas Parent to Parent, supporting other families through parent matches, I discovered my passion for connection and advocacy. When a part-time role opened on the family support team, I was thrilled to officially join the organization. It was more than a job—it was an opportunity to deepen my knowledge, help families facing similar challenges, and be part of something truly meaningful.

A few years later, I transitioned to the newly created Pathways to Adulthood program, which was built with the vision and heart of Rosmary Alexander. I had the privilege of working closely with her, learning from her wisdom and passion. Today, the program is in its 12th year and has become a trusted resource for families and professionals across Texas.

In 2021, I was honored to be named Program Director. I’ve now been with Texas Parent to Parent for 14 incredible years, and every day, I’m reminded of the strength and resilience of the families we serve. In January, I took another step in my journey by enrolling at Walden University to pursue my bachelor’s degree in social work—continuing my commitment to learning, growing, and giving back.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There were moments when I felt lost and isolated, unsure if I was making the right decisions. Each new diagnosis brought not only fear, but also a deep sense of responsibility to learn more and fight harder. Our family’s world shifted, and with it came emotional, financial, and personal challenges that tested our resilience daily.
Balancing work and home life has never been easy, especially as a parent and caregiver. There are days when the weight of responsibilities feels overwhelming—juggling meetings, deadlines, school events, doctor appointments, and the daily needs of a family. The emotional labor often continues long after the workday ends, and carving out time for myself can feel impossible. Guilt creeps in from both sides—when I’m working, I worry I’m not present enough at home, and when I’m focused on my family, I feel like I’m falling behind professionally. It’s a constant push and pull, and some days feel like a blur of tasks and expectations. But over time, I’ve learned that it’s okay to ask for help, to let go of perfection, and to find small moments of peace amid the chaos. The balance may never be perfect, but giving myself grace has made all the difference.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Working with families and the professionals who support them has given me the knowledge and tools to empower both groups in meaningful, lasting ways. As a parent myself, I bring a unique perspective—one shaped by personal experience and a deep understanding of what it means to navigate complex systems while supporting a child with disabilities.

My passion lies in walking alongside families, especially those whose children are transitioning into adulthood. I specialize in helping families understand and plan for this critical stage, addressing everything from public funding and legal considerations to education, medical needs, employment, housing, and building strong, supportive networks.

I’m especially proud of the Pathways to Adulthood program and the impact it has had within the disability community. What began as a response to real family needs has grown into a trusted, valued resource for countless families across our community.

I carry on this work in honor of Rosemary, who passed away several years ago but whose vision and commitment laid the foundation for everything we do today. I’m here to continue that legacy—with compassion, clarity, and a shared understanding of what this journey truly looks like.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
The disability community is stronger together. Each of us brings our own personal experiences as parents, caregivers, and advocates—and within those stories lies the opportunity to learn, grow, and support one another. There’s so much wisdom in our shared journeys, and when we come together, we create a network of strength, empathy, and hope that benefits every family walking this path.
