Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Wolfe.
Hi Emily, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Austin and attended St. Edward’s University. I’ve been a musician my entire life, but that’s where I started playing music live – in the campus coffee shop, then around town in small clubs like The Cactus Cafe, Mohawk Indoors, and Stubbs Indoors. I always wanted to be a touring musician with records, but I never really knew how to get there until I started playing out in town—everything snowballed. Austin is where I found my sound and identity as an artist, and now I tour nationally and internationally.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. Making a business out of art is one of the most challenging, uphill battles I’ve ever experienced. But all the hard work and grinding I’ve done over the past 12 years has built on itself. Each challenge is a learning opportunity; even if it’s a small stepping stone, it still means I’m going forward. There is so much rejection in this industry I’ve chosen to pursue, but it’s allowed me to tap into perseverance every day. The thing that has kept me going is the people closest to me, including my fantastic wife, who has helped me build my career from the ground up, Codey Allen Messick and the Gibson guitar family, my band, and other notable musicians I’ve met along the way. Finding people who lift you up and keep you grounded is essential. All I want to do with my life is play music to as many people as possible because performing is my favorite. It’s a rollercoaster being a musician, especially a touring musician. I’ve tackled addiction and been sober for over 9 years, made it through betrayals and rejections, and overcome struggles with mental health on the road, among other things, but I will say I love playing music far too much for the cons to outweigh the pros.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a songwriter, singer, guitar player, and front of a power trio. I play rock & roll music loud and in your face, though I love writing a ballad or a pop tune here and there. I produced my most recent record and am now producing other bands and artists. People would say I’m known for my guitar playing, as I have 2 signature guitars out on the global market with Epiphone. I’ve got 3 albums and several singles, but I’m known for my live shows. It’s hard to tell what the word on the street is about me because I tend to avoid reading reviews – good or bad. I’d rather keep pushing forward and hope for the best. I’m most proud of my most recent album, The Blowback. What sets me apart from others? It’s my obsessive work ethic, but it’s hard to say. I don’t know how different I am from others, but I have accomplished much I’m proud of.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was timid as a kid but very extroverted around people I loved, which is still true today. I remember growing up wanting to get obligations over with, like school and church, so I could lock myself in my room, play guitar, and write songs.
