Today we’d like to introduce you to Haley Folkman.
Hi Haley, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
A few years back, I was a depressed college student just trying to keep my head above water. I felt like I needed a creative outlet to take my mind off things, so I explored a few different avenues, including photography. The first time I went out by myself to take photos of nature, I felt so at peace with myself and was instantly obsessed.
As time went on and I learned more and more about photographic theory and techniques, the more and more I couldn’t think about anything else. I reached out to a local award-winning photographer and she agreed to mentor me.
I started taking on projects like weddings, and though it seemed impossible, I fell more in love with photography. I loved the way different angles and lighting portrayed emotions!
Since I moved here to Austin a year ago, I’ve funneled a lot of time and effort into becoming a member of the wedding photography community and building meaningful relationships and connections!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest struggle I have faced is doubting myself. When I was first starting out, it was hard to be a beginner at something! A very humbling experience to realize there was so much for me to learn. However, it’s so important to trust the process and that’s what’s helped me to combat my self-doubt.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a wedding photographer and I lean toward a documentary-style! I love raw emotion and I believe small moments are sometimes the most revealing of what’s important to us.
People often comment on my black and white photographs and the interesting angles I tend to capture!
I’m most proud of how far I’ve come and the ability that I’ve had to train my eye to see the world artistically.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I just love my brides. All of them. Past, present, and prospective.
