Life & Work with Jack Frink of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Frink.

Jack Frink

Hi Jack, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Upon graduating from college in 2008, I found myself without an active music project. Over the next few months I started connecting with fellow musicians and artists who were also looking for something new. Motion Planet was born as a band with only three members, two instruments, and one song sometime in 2009 or 2010. In between getting married to my wife, Kristen, and building a life and household together, I continued to create/rehearse/perform/record with MP. A decade and a half later, we are a tight quartet and have released a new record – “Ahead Of The Weather.” We are currently setting up shows for 2025 and beyond.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Keeping a creative project together is rarely a smooth road. Since our inception, Motion Planet has undergone multiple lineup changes due to life circumstances or health issues. This led to MP operating for stretches with reduced members. This situation was combined with the considerable logistic and financial strains that emerge from a long-term, group musical project. The COVID pandemic in 2020 also severely delayed the band’s momentum. But member recruitment has also proven to be an opportunity for further networking and immersion in the Austin music scene. It’s been tough but rewarding, and we are very happy with MP’s current direction and member lineup.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Motion Planet is a rock quartet employing a variety of song styles and interweaving male/female vocals. We do not intentionally ascribe to any sub-genre; each song should be its own entity. We play fast, we play slow, we shift dynamics (i.e. quiet to loud), we can be tender or angry. MP’s released catalog (which can be found on streaming services) comprises two full albums – “In Between The Moons” (2018) and “Ahead Of The Weather” (2024) – and a 2015 EP, “Save The Youth Center.”

The band’s lineup:

Jack Frink – guitars, vocals
Kristen Frink – vocals, percussion
Dan Skarbek – drums
Katie Koebrich – bass

Motion Planet is currently booking live shows for 2025 while workshopping new material. We are incorporating more keyboard textures into the arrangements.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
As someone born and raised, I am biased, but Austin has some of the best culture and variety of life. If you wanted, there is something new to do every night. And I still think the majority of people I encounter day-to-day are friendly!

What I like least is that, in recent years, we see a lot more car collisions/wrecks on the highway. I know the population has exploded in the city, but I wish more citizens cared to drive safely.
