Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Treviño, LMT, MLD-C, LCSW
Hi Jackie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into massage therapy actually started as a personal quest for healing. “Touch” wasn’t always a safe word for me and I wanted to rewire my understanding and build a safe and empowered relationship with the meaning. This interest in personal wellness brought me to massage therapy after experiencing its benefits firsthand. I was struggling with chronic tension and stress, and a few sessions with a skilled therapist made a huge difference in my physical and mental well-being. That inspired me to pursue a career in massage therapy at the age of twenty-one. I went through formal training, learned from amazing mentors, and eventually started my own business here in Austin, where I could share the same healing benefits with others.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the challenges I’ve faced over the past fourteen years is staying physically healthy while continuing to practice massage. Continuing education has played a key role in helping me stay in the business. To protect my hands and shoulders, I sought out a mentor to learn Thai Massage, which combines compression techniques with passive and assistive stretching, all performed on a mat.
Shortly after learning Thai Massage, I was invited to join the wonderful team at Austin Ashiatsu, where I received extensive in-house training. During my time there, I worked for several years performing Ashiatsu which is a style of myofascial massage using my feet while holding bars above the massage table.
When I decided to go solo, I used my knowledge of mat work to adapt Ashiatsu for the floor, allowing me to offer this service to clients in the comfort of their homes. My massage career has evolved in ways that have allowed me to keep my business thriving. I am currently the only mobile massage provider offering Ashiatsu and custom facial massage in Austin.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
After I received my first Ashiatsu massage from the owner of Austin Ashiatsu, it was the best treatment to address my chronic neck issues. Over the years, I’ve experienced many different modalities and worked with many talented bodyworkers, but I’ve never been completely pain-free by the end of a session until I experienced a well-trained, seasoned Ashiatsu massage. It was a dream come true when I was invited to join the team immediately after my session. I knew it was the beginning of learning a masterful technique that gave consistent results to those living with ongoing pain like I was. Seven years later, I still know this to be true and am honored to carry on my floor-adapted version of a unique style born in Austin by the very best.
Another “aha” moment came years ago when I realized that facial massage was going to become a major trend across both the esthetics and massage therapy industries. After receiving a massage-focused facial from a talented esthetician, I was so impressed with the results that I thought to myself, “I can totally do this, and I can do it really well.” I know massage, I understand how to work with muscles, and I fundamentally know the benefits of massage on the face. So, I immediately took a class in Los Angeles with some estheticians and began offering facial massage with resounding positive feedback. I am in my 30s and never have yet to use injectables and get compliments on my skin almost daily. I only massage, use manual lymphatic drainage and wash my face at night. I love to empower women to use my services and even teach them with their own tools (hands) to stay looking healthy and youthful.
Facial massage add-ons to a full-body Ashiatsu treatment are now a premium offering, and I honestly wish they were more widely available. I’ve been singing its praises, along with my clients and colleagues. I believe some are catching on and beginning to train in this area. I’d truly love to experience it myself someday!
What matters most to you?
What matters is that my clients know I truly appreciate their trust in me, especially in their homes. I’ve worked with clients through multiple pregnancies, weddings, separations, and the loss of loved ones and I could go on. It’s truly a privilege to be a part of someone else’s healing journey.
I know that nervous system jargon and pop psychology sayings are rampant on social media in the beauty and massage industries, so I don’t feel the need to give anyone the spiel. All I need to say is that my other job is as a licensed clinical social worker, and I can confidently claim—through both my scopes of knowledge—that the most important element across all fields is the same: the therapeutic relationship. I’m not here to teach you anything you don’t already know. I’m here to listen and help you release what you’ve been holding on to without judgment in a safe space. Hopefully, the result is that you feel relaxed and more at peace without having to drive home with, “massage brain.”
