Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmin Guerra.
Hi Jasmin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
A Dominican designer and creator of beautiful and functional spaces, coming from an education in Interior Design, I want to keep using my education and expertise to help people fall in love with their homes. I started jasmin.decore in 2021. After a few years of being a stay home mom and taking care of the administrative part of my husband’s trucking business, I realized I needed to do something creative with my life. Interior design has always had my heart. Growing up, my mom struggled, but it was important for her to keep our room clean and beautiful. She made sure we felt safe, happy, and taken care of. I love how transforming a space has such a big impact on our life; being able to help people create the home of their dreams is a blessing.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I started my business, the hardest part was getting organized and finding what documents I needed and what process would work best for me. Once I had that down, things started to run much more smoothly. We learn a lot of information in design school, but the everyday business part of this needs to be highlighted in school.
The other aspect that can be challenging is working with different contractors; you learn as you go and as you get experience. I am very open to working with other contractors (if my client has a preferred one, somebody they trust). They have a good work ethic and complete a professional job. I have learned that it is best for the client to pay the contractors directly (painters, electricians, plumbers, etc.) instead of me being the middleman; this provides a more transparent process for the client. Looking back, it has been like putting a puzzle together; a lot of research, patience, love and passion for what I do have kept me going. If I could give one piece of advice to new designers, it would be to ask all the questions, even the simple questions, find a process that works for you, and start to network not only with other designers and brands but also with people in professions we as designers rely on like painters, electricians, etc.
Thanks for sharing that. Can you tell us more about your work next?
I am located in Central Texas, jasmin.decore is an interior design business that offers timeless and unique home decor services in person and E-Design (virtual design). Many people have a tough time making their vision a reality; looking for inspiration online often ends up making people even more overwhelmed by scrolling through pages like Pinterest that have so many different ideas, spend money on things that later don’t make sense in their space or don’t try at all and just keep things very simple. Nothing wrong with that! But it will cost more money in the long run. Home is not a place but a feeling. The best feeling is to wake up in a home you love, to feel peace when you walk into your house, a functional and beautiful space that is yours, your oasis. My superpower is creating these spaces.
I am known for taking care of everything! I go above and beyond with all my projects and will grab the paintbrush myself if necessary. Details matter! All of the decision-making falls on me as well as space planning, sourcing out furniture, paint color, hard finishes, etc., and site visits to ensure everything is being completed to my standards.
I am very proud of my projects; they all mean so much. Each one represents a lot of hours of hard work. I will forever be thankful to my clients for trusting me.
What sets me apart from others is my work ethic, personality, and how easy and stress-free my process is for my clients. I am easy going and always open to working with my client’s preferred contractors and shopping for them in stores like Target or Home Goods to help them save big money without sacrificing the quality of each piece and the project outcome. When I finish a project, my client has nothing else to worry about.
Any big plans?
Keep working on my projects, putting my heart into every design and every design. It does not matter how big or small the project is; they all mean so much to me. I plan on designing as many houses as possible, helping people create a home they love and truly enjoy. And my biggest dream (since I started jasmin.decore) has been for my husband to join me in this journey and for us to work full time in design work. He helps me occasionally when he is available, he is a perfectionist and such a hard worker I would be so lucky to have him in my team 23/7. He has a good eye for little details, so he would be a great addition to jasmin.decore. I am very thankful to my clients for trusting me and opening the doors of their homes to me; what an honor!
