Life & Work with Jessica and Dillan Wilding of Central Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica and Dillan Wilding of Wilding Photography.

Jessica Wilding

Hi Jessica and Dillan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hello! Both of us have always been interested in photography–Dillan working mostly in digital and Jessica in film photography. When we had our daughter a few years ago, we upgraded our camera to take photos of her. Soon, we had friends and family asking us if we’d had the pictures professionally taken, and then asking if we could photograph their own families once they learned we’d taken the photos ourselves.

Everything sort of snowballed from there, culminating in the business we run today! We love being able to work together when capturing other families’ memories, with Dillan taking the photos and Jessica directing the poses and editing the images.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been such an exciting and enjoyable time, but definitely not without its obstacles! We’ve had a steep learning curve acquainting ourselves with new editing software and working out the structure of the business, as well as studying posing and lighting techniques. We’ve also had to balance being new business owners at the same time as being new parents–not an easy task!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We specialize in family shoots, including maternity and newborn. We’ve found that being parents of a young child is a huge benefit to our clients. They feel comfortable dealing with the realities of parenthood during a photoshoot since they know we understand, whether that be fussy babies or headstrong and distractible toddlers. We’re no strangers to spit up or blowouts, or having to pause and regroup to feed a hungry baby. Jessica has even spent a photoshoot bouncing a client’s fussy 4-month-old while still directing and posing the rest of the family!

We’re constantly perfecting our craft, and most recently we’re proud of the maternity photoshoot we completed for Jessica’s sister. From the colors, to the light, to the love between family members, the photos turned out truly gorgeous and we’re so happy we were able to capture those precious moments.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
We started our business a few years after the beginning of the pandemic, so we fortunately didn’t have to deal with lockdowns and social distancing! However, the Covid-19 crisis definitely reinforced the need to reschedule shoots if anyone is feeling sick, as the safety of our clients and our family is of the utmost importance.
