Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Abundez.
Hi Jon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Prior moving to Austin I would frequently visit here for concerts and slowly discovered the Austin food scene. One of my first foodie experience was when Ramen Tatsuya first opened and I came up to try it out. I remember posting a photo of my ramen it noticed it got more likes and comments than other IG posts but didn’t think much of it. A few years passed and I had finally moved to Austin so I began documenting my daily life here and posting about all these different restaurants I was exploring. It wasn’t until a couple years later I started to notice my food posts were getting more attention so I decided to focus on that. Fast forward to today to where I’ve gained a little bit of a following and been keeping up with the growing Austin food scene.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It took some time to gain followers in the beginning as I did a lot of trail and errors until I figured out what worked and didn’t. I also would try to eat at different restaurants and see as many concerts all the time that I burned myself out for a little bit. So now I go at my own pace and taken the pressure to constantly post on myself.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Sr. Product Engineer for a medical device company that manufactures mechanical heart valves or as I like to say I fix broken hearts lol. I’ve been in this job for the last 4 years and have been in medical devices for 10 years now. I would say what I’m the most proud of is knowing the work I do actually saves people’s lives, we actually get thank you notes from patients which makes me more proud of what I do. What sets me apart from the others is I joke that I’m not your typical Engineer as all my interests are socializing, exploring new restaurants, sports, traveling, and music (I’ve also played in a few bands before)
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
A lot of my friends know me for having really good luck as I tend to win at a lot of contests that I sign up for or always winning free tickets to shows/concerts. Also being at the right place and time has been the case for me as well as I’ve met celebrities, gotten into unforgettable nights, or found some of the best places to eat on a whim.
