Today we’d like to introduce you to Jules Valdez.
Jules, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
One day, I just decided … I decided to stop feeling so stagnant, both in my life path and in my own body. I decided to withdraw from the people that influenced terrible habits and a detrimental day to day lifestyle. I decided to stop avoiding the person looking back at me in ever reflection. But what took priority was my decision to mend myself, inside and outside, from what was painfully expanding and deteriorating.
I grew up on the Southside of San Antonio, Texas. Nutrition and exercise seemed like textbook words you needed to know to pass a class. I grew up eating all the tacos, drinking all the Big Red and gaining all the weight. I found myself tightly fitting a size 18 in high school, and never actually fitting in socially. Once college came around; “Trim Spa Baby” was what I would declare with my trimming down here and there. I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree from the University of the Incarnate Word and began working in retail, until it became painful to even stand. I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis, an abnormal growth on my spinal column that effects the nerves and causes chronic pain. I would receive steroid injections in my spine every three months to alleviate the pain, until they stopped working. My only option was surgery.
Instead of surgery, I took a dismal approach and self-medicated with people, habits and fleeting feel goods. I found myself 220lbs at 5ft 3. That’s when I decided.
I made that life-altering decision in April of 2013, it has been 10 years, and I look back and graciously thank myself for being so fearlessly confident. I shaped a new methodology by educating myself on those “textbook words” I looked past when I was younger. I was able to challenge myself in ways I never knew I could. I competed in the Phil Health and Battle on the Bay National Physique Committee Bikini Competitions, I became NASM Certified, a Certified Life Coach and now an LLC owner.
I am proud to say, I have lost over 100lbs, and gained an exhilaration for life that I chose to educate and guide others with. I welcome all levels of clients with honesty, relatability, education and experience. Physically training the body is a temporary guise to see past discomfort and unacquainted interaction with fitness, what a connected trainer does is so much deeper. You are developing your clients mentally helping them find courage they didn’t know they had. My past was all on purpose, my purpose.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
If your journey is a smooth road, you’ll never get to see what your vehicle is capable of. Struggles teach you how strong you are, my weight loss journey has finally come to its layover and boarding the LLC flight post covid has been a struggle. But thankfully, it brought people out of solely seeking aesthetics and wanting overall happiness and wellness. In a market so saturated, it is difficult to set yourself apart from major fitness “go-to’s”.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I know what overthinking embodies, I know because that was my body. But what I continued to explore were all of the options that are out there for a solution. One day I decided … I didn’t want to feel constrained in something that kept expanding and deteriorating. I shaped a new methodology by educating myself on the human mind and body. Researched products, ingredients, effects, scientific research, successes and failures in all aspects of fitness marketing. I felt enlightened and confident in what works.
I believe in building relationships beyond training. I myself am an over 100lb weight loss success, and I can still remember people who motivated me along the toughest parts of my journey. It’s not what you do that matters, it’s how you make people feel with what you do that matters.
The House of Werk LLC is best described as an overall health and wellness endeavor, it is aimed at encouraging long-term proactive perspective. I myself am a 100lb weight loss transformation, Certified Life Coach and Trainer, and absolutely passionate about guiding others with the outcomes of my trial and error. My mission through The House of Werk is to reshape the idea that “I’ll be ideal, when I lose weight”. I have worked with over 90+ women in their journeys, and what I have learned is that; weight loss is a byproduct of overcoming barriers, taking action, finding routine, finding self and satisfaction within your day-to-day tasks.
I break my classes up into 4 main objectives created for the general population:
Strength and Stabilization
Stabilization training focuses on strengthening muscles that prevent injury, low back pain, joint stiffness, and bad posture.
Function and Flexibility
Flexibility is integrated into this class by focusing on improving your range of motion for your body’s optimal performance using body weight, free weights, and resistance bands.
Progressive Endurance
Improvements in stamina, daily energy, a decrease in body fat and a conquered confidence are all attainable with a higher level of endurance.
Centric Action Training
This unique workout method interchanges specific muscle groups with effective exercises applied to increase lean muscle and boost weight loss.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
It’s not what you do that matters, it’s how you make people feel with what you do that matters.
