Hi Kellsie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I knew early on I wanted to start a spray tanning business for when I came to college as a side gig to make extra money. We first started doing spray tans back in 2018 going into my junior year of high school. We transformed our home office into our in-home tanning studio. Throughout my last years of high school, I did tans for local events such as proms, homecomings, weddings, etc. to build a portfolio and trust from clients for when I came to Texas State University in San Marcos. My mom and I went through multiple trainings to become certified spray tan artists and are still continuing our education to this day. When I headed off to college, we both switched to strictly mobile spray tan appointments. A mobile spray tan appointment is similar to a house call. We come to the client’s desired location, set up all of our equipment, and provide the luxury of tanning in your own home. This process has worked great here at TXST, it has become a tradition for sororities, athletes, dancers, etc. to all gather on a Thursday night for a tanning party with me. Here are Texas State, we provide a discounted student tan price in order for our spray tans to fit in a college students budget while still providing a quality tan you would get at a tanning studio. This way, we are saving college students time and money. Shortly after joining the spray tanning world, we realized there is a lot more to it than making some extra money on the side and providing a quality spray tan. It is more importantly about making our clients feel confident in their own skin. We feel passionate about the dangers of bed tanning and are advocates for providing a safe way to tan. We have gotten to where we are today by the support of families and friends supporting our small business, tanning with us, sharing our social media posts, and recommending us to others in the community.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The biggest struggle I have endured as being a young spray tan artist is gaining trust from my clients and proving I am just as capable as some veterans in the industry. When my mom and I attended our first spray tanning certification course, I was the youngest in the room by a long shot. It was clear some clients were hesitant to let me tan them due to my age and minimal experience when I first started. Now with going on four years of spray tanning under my belt, I am confident to say all of my clients have full confidence that I am knowledgeable at what I am doing. Being in a college town, there are multiple other spray tan artists in the area that provide lower prices. It is difficult seeing some of my clients switch to other artists due to a lower price point. It has taken me a while to know my worth and that I am providing a luxury experience from start to finish. I have to remind myself from time to time, my clients are paying for my knowledge, time, top-of-the-line materials, reliability, and a healthy client to artist relationship.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Golden Glo Tans is a mother and daughter-owned mobile spray tanning business located in San Marcos and Georgetown, TX. We provide a vegan, organic-based, custom coloring spray tan service. We specialize in creating a custom colored spray tan to specifically work with your base skin color to create a natural, bronzed tan on your body. We educate our clients on the benefits of spray tanning, the dangers of bed tanning, how to prep your skin for a spray tan, and how to maintain a long-lasting spray tan. We are huge allies for body positivity and believe anyone no matter the size, shape, color, or gender can rock a glowing spray tan. With being certified multiple times, we are very knowledgeable about the spray tanning process and feel strongly about making sure our clients are educated every step of the way about what they’re putting on their bodies. We are known for our spray tanning parties. A spray tanning party is where you gather your friends, teammates, bridal group, etc. play some music, drink some bubbly and all get spray tanned. This is a great way for us to bond with our clients and not make the experience so intimidating.
Being in the comfort of your home, surrounded by your people can really ease the nerves of first-time spray tan clients. The times where I feel the proudest is when I can provide a quality tanning experience for clients who might have had an unpleasant experience somewhere else such as a booth tanning salon. The thing that sets us apart from the others is our spray tans are customized as we are real people performing the tan. The majority of the time at booth tanning salons the machine sprays one way for every body type. The spray tanning solution is going to get in different places for everyone considering not every person is the same size. When having a spray tan artist, we are able to work with your body and see exactly what areas need to be tanned. We take pride in making sure our clients are taken care of from start to finish. We give them detailed instructions of what to do before, during, and after their tan to make the experience a breeze. All of our clients have our personal phone numbers to ask any further questions, troubleshoot any mishaps after we left their appointment or if they just want to show off their gorgeous new tan!
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
One thing I wish I would have followed when starting out with my small business is to not be afraid of what others think. Especially starting my small business in high school, I had peers try and tear my business and me down or belittle it in reflection of their little knowledge to what my business stands for. If you have something you believe in and are passionate about, put your all into it and not be afraid to show others. Remember that every business has to start somewhere and your struggles in the beginning only lead to a great success story in the end!
