Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Gordon
Hi Kelsey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
From a very early age, it was clear to everyone that I loved to talk (I am a certified yapper). When I turned 7 years old my parents had me audition for my first musical, and just like that I was hooked. I absolutely loved getting into character and telling a story to the audience. Although I didn’t continue with musical theatre, my love of storytelling never faded. I became involved in journalism and went on to pursue a degree in Communication at Cornell University and after obtained my law degree at Duke University.
About a year ago I was on FaceTime with my best friend telling her a story about a crazy date I had been on. In the middle of my story she interrupted me and said, “Kels, you need to become a professional storyteller.” Although I laughed off the comment at the time, something about that statement inspired me. I decided to start posting storytimes based on Reddit posts on TikTok while getting ready in the morning. I was able to combine my love of storytelling with my passion for makeup and fashion.
A year later, I have a community of over 500,000 TikTok followers, and 175,000 Instagram followers who love storytelling as much as I do! Social media has been such an incredible creative outlet for me, and I’m so lucky to have such an amazing support system that encourages me to pursue my dreams.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I was always nervous to start posting on social media. I was afraid that people were going to make fun of my videos or judge me. This fear held me back for years, until one day I decided that I was the only thing standing in my way. I finally adopted a “who cares” mentality. People are making fun of my videos? Who cares, let them. As long as I am doing what makes me feel happy and fulfilled, it doesn’t matter what anyone else has to say. Choosing this mentality changed my life and allowed so many opportunities to come my way that I didn’t even know were possible. If I would have let my fear of judgment hold me back, I never would have discovered my passion for content creation.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I create beauty/fashion/lifestyle content on TikTok (kelsgordon) and Instagram (kels.gordon). My main focus on my account is telling stories while I put my makeup on in the mornings. Some of the stories are my own, but most are retellings from Reddit. As a woman in my twenties, I also create content centered around my dating experiences and giving dating advice to other women. I have made a lot of mistakes when it comes to dating, so I try to give advice to hopefully help others avoid my mistakes!
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My mom and stepdad’s wedding! Family is the most important thing in the world to me, and that day was so special and I’m so blessed that I was able to be a part of it.
