Life & Work with Kimberly Martin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Martin.

Hi Kimberly, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I was always fascinated with the transformations stylists would accomplish on beauty/fashion shows on TV. It inspired me to pursue a career in an industry where your quirks and differences are accepted. My high school offered the cosmetology program and when I got my diploma, I was able to take the state board test and get my cosmetology license. I started working part-time in one of the local salons in my hometown, while also attending college part-time. Working in the salon, I realized how much I truly loved what I was doing. I set bigger goals for myself and moved up to Austin to find a salon with more opportunities. I started working at Visible Changes in Austin and went through their extensive color training. I was gaining experience/knowledge and working my way up when Covid closed us. The Austin locations didn’t reopen and I was left to figure out ‘what next?’ I decided to open my business and get a private suite to continue doing what I love. I opened Kim’s Hairway to Heaven inside the Salons by JC Round Rock location. I’ve been having so much fun learning the ins and outs of the business and making a difference in people’s lives. I’m looking forward to all of the new opportunities throughout my career in beauty.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I definitely had my struggles along the way. The one the hit the hardest was losing my job at Visible Changes due to the pandemic. At the time I was working my dream job and was very happy with where I was at. When they closed it was devastating to me and I was really lost on what to do next.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a hairstylist that specializes in color. I love experimenting with formulas and creating transformations. I’m most proud of the color design work I do. Hand-painting designs on someone’s head is tedious and challenging but so rewarding. I get so happy when someone wants to do bright, fun, “out there” colors.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I’ve been fortunate that all of the elder/more experienced stylists I’ve worked with have been very willing to help me however they can. Be open to learning any new technique you can, different perspectives may help things click. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
