Life & Work with Kimberly Turner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Turner.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I used to suffer from pretty severe anxiety growing up and my best friend Hanna gave me a canvas and said “Just paint. I don’t care what you paint just paint something.” And ever since that day, all I have wanted to do was art. I went to school for design for a little while where I fell in love with color composition. I learned different techniques and mediums, which is where I found the medium I prefer doing today, which is colored pencil. I eventually did get into tattooing which is extremely rewarding as I am able to put my art on other people to have for the rest of their lives

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never easy. Nothing in life worth wanting and chasing after is ever easy. For the longest time, I was told art will never pay your bills, you need something more stable and consistent. Which is why I went through and got my medical assisting and phlebotomy certification. But art always pulled me back. And that is now how I make my livelihood

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in color realism with my medium being color pencil usually on wood panels or Bristol paper. As well as Abstract realism in acrylic. I’m a tattoo artist full time where I specialize in stipple shading, fine line, watercolor, and color abstract realism. I’m originally from Delaware so establishing myself here in Texas among other artists and the community has been truly rewarding as many people don’t get to have this opportunity. I think just the style I portray in my work or my day-to-day life just speaks volumes of how my mind sees the world, VIBRANT!

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I’d have to say that persistence and motivation are truly important to anyone’s success as well as having a heart for the craft. Money isn’t everything! To when you work on a piece whether that be on paper or on skin, it needs to come from your soul.
