Today we’d like to introduce you to L. Todd Kelly.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The firm was founded in 2006 by Todd Kelly and achieved some notoriety representing sexual assault victims against military contractors. During that time, Robbye, then “Bryan,” began work at the firm as an intern. Todd and Robbye began dating during the latter days of this first iteration of the firm. After two unsuccessful trials in 2011-2012, the firm was shut down and Todd and Robbye moved to Austin – where Todd had started to work at a larger, multi-office firm.
The two joined Celebration Church, in Georgetown in 2015, and have been regular attenders and serve in the church since that time. Todd and Robbye were married in 2016. In 2019, the couple was blessed with a daughter. Although he had become a partner in the law firm, Todd decided to branch back out into firm ownership.
He started, briefly, with two other partners, but learned in less than a year that his differences with his new partners were untenable. Robbye, who had begun work at the firm as an office manager, left with Todd to reopen The Kelly Law Firm. This time, the two decided to do business as “Lone Star Legal.” Todd would lead the litigation of the firm’s cases, while Robbye would head up the business side of the firm.
Within a year of re-opening the firm, Todd’s former law partner, Rob Ranco, joined the firm – and together they are the only two Board Certified Personal Injury Trial Lawyers in Georgetown, Texas. Today, the Kelly Law Firm, dba Lone Star Legal serves clients in six states, and focuses on commercial trucking cases, serious motor vehicle collisions, sexual assault, vicious animal attacks, wrongful death, and traumatic brain injury cases.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been bumpy, to say the least. As we reopened the firm, our former firms filed liens on the cases of every client who had made the decision to stay with us. There was litigation and all of the distractions that go with it. Because of the reasons that Todd left his firm (which remain confidential under their agreement), the departure was sudden and therefore financial backing was not in place.
Despite having been a partner who ran an office in one of Texas’ largest personal injury law firms just one year prior, lenders suddenly acted like Todd was a newcomer to the business, and loans were not forthcoming. It required sacrifice of not only time, but the couple’s retirement funds as well – sometimes just to make payroll. The cases, even when they settled for good money, were usually encumbered with referral fees or other reductions that made the struggle all the more painful.
After working out of the home for the first few months, the firm was able to move into an office in September of 2024. By January of 2025, Todd was in the ICU for reasons that he did not understand until toxic mold was found in the building in June of 2025. That revelation forced the firm back into the remote-working situation, and made supervision and oversight a challenge.
Daily morning huddles helped keep the team on track, and hiring quality people who care about the clients we represent made the transition manageable, but not ideal.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We help injured people find justice in a complicated and often overly oppressive legal system. Todd and our other primary litigator, Rob, are both Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law, and both have very good reputations in the legal community. Todd is also an instructor at the Trial Lawyers College, and was inducted into the Texas Lawyer Hall of Fame in 2013.
As specialists in personal injury law, we can handle any personal injury case, but choose to focus on serious injuries caused by Commercial Vehicle and other serious automobile collisions, sexual assault, wrongful death, traumatic brain injury, and other serious, permanent injuries. Recently, Todd completed a case for a seriously injured man who was paralyzed at an indoor adventure park.
While there are a number of accolades that adorn our walls and our website pages, what sets us apart is the caring approach to what we do. Every day starts with a team huddle that ends in prayer. The prayer is for our clients, our work, and our focus – that it remain serving as a reflection of our Savior, Jesus.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Caring for others more than yourself. When you put others first, it shows in the quality of your work and the depth of your dedication. When you are just striving for money, that is obvious to everyone.
Loyalty to our clients and our team is critical. Often people simply strive to be the best they can be – personally. When that is the focus, there is a limit to how far one is willing to strive to achieve success. When you do it for those around you, there is just something extra that drives you forward.
Service-oriented people tend to do best in this business. We are, after all, in the service of providing legal guidance and representation to people who are most in need and least equipped (generally) to face the challenges ahead.
Leadership is a quality that seems difficult to teach. It can be cultivated, but people either have the tendency to lead others or they do not. This is something that we look for in its raw form, and then seek to cultivate it to create the best leaders that we can in our field.
