Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Baker.
Hi Lauren, I am so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been the girly girl; thanks to my mother and grandmother, they always ensured it. My grandmother, an entrepreneur/cosmetologist for over 65 years, exposed me to the world of beauty when I was 6 years old. If I were moving fast enough, I would grit around and dress myself in her pearls, rings, and anything else I could handle, including her red lipstick. I was always intrigued whenever my mother was getting ready for the day and going through her daily makeup routine: MAC foundation powder, bronzer, eyeliner, and violet Mac lipstick. Although I was interested in makeup at a very young age, my mother only allowed me to start my makeup kit when I was 16. It consisted of MAC foundation powder, dip-brow pomade, and strip lashes. As an esthetician, my mother did not want me to be dependent on makeup and always ensured I was taking care of my skin underneath. At that point, I watched YouTube tutorials endlessly, trying to keep up with the latest beauty trends and product reviews. I took a leap of faith during my senior year of high school by doing my makeup for prom. I refused to allow my mom to pay for something I could do myself. I studied my craft for weeks, and when prom time arrived, I did not disappoint. I did so well on my makeup for prom that a close family friend reached out to me, asking if I could do her daughter’s makeup for prom, which was coming up in the next few weeks. I was so honored that she asked. This was my first project, and it turned out beautifully for me. I was so grateful, humbled, and excited at the support of others I now consider my village.
After graduating high school, I relocated to Austin, TX, to attend the Illustrious Huston-Tillotson University, where I majored in Business Marketing. March of 2020 marked the beginning of Covid, which forced the closure of the University, which, in turn, caused me to move back home to San Antonio. As much as I disliked being quarantined, this allowed me to watch YouTube videos, practice with my mom, and perfect my craft. Also, this time at home allowed me to observe the business practices of my dad, a self-employed Photographer, and develop a way to merge the worlds of business and beauty. When the University reopened, I cashed in all my chips and bet on myself. In March 2021, I created an Instagram page for @BlendedxBaker, initially for makeup content, and then I stepped out on faith and took my first client in September 2021, charging $25. I wanted to give college students an affordable glam experience while making a name for myself as the campus’s newest makeup artist.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Since beginning my business and still being in college, makeup has become a side hustle. At times, balancing work, schoolwork, and being a makeup artist was hard. However, it has been a fantastic journey because life always has struggles. Suppose I did well with my makeup, building my clientele, networking, and posting content on social media. In that case, I needed to catch up regarding my educational obligations and vice versa. This journey hasn’t been easy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. There will always be good and bad days, and I am grateful for them all. I am thankful for the lessons I have learned, my connections, and the networking through school and the makeup industry. I have been blessed with a gift to help others feel beautiful and heard when they book with me.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a self-taught makeup artist, I’ve honed my skills in creating natural and soft glams. My journey has been a roller coaster, but I’m grateful for every twist and turn that has led me to where I am today. The support and growth I’ve experienced with my clients have been invaluable, and my goal at Blended by Baker is to provide a safe and welcoming space for them.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Looking ahead, I have a dream of opening a salon suite pampering bar, a place where women can unwind and get dolled up. Until then, I will continue to learn, perfect my craft, and let my passion for makeup guide my journey, trusting in God’s plan for my steps.
