Today we’d like to introduce you to Mac Mcintosh.
Hi Mac, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a native Austinite. I grew up in east Austin. I began singing in the church around age 8. I put the jazz show band The Michael Hale Trio ft Mac Mcintosh together just over 8 years ago and we began performing at Half Step on Rainey Street every Tuesday. Since then we’ve performed at all sorts of venues and events.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There are always struggles in the music industry. Fortunately, we are an extremely close-knit group. Our goal is always to be true to the music and stay humble.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am simply a jazz singer. If that can be considered simple. I’ve imitated a great tenor saxophone player named Gene Ammons since I was a teenager. It’s the beautiful sound. I’m most about putting and managing to keep this band together and thriving. Our sound and approach sets us apart. Our stage is holy ground. It’s very loving to hear and see.
Before the covid hit, I was approached by Bryan Poyser to be in a short film featuring me and the band plus Tameca Jones based on a personal story Bryan had written. We did a two-day shoot at C-Boys in December 2021. “Don’t You Go Nowhere” is the name of the film and it’s the name of a song we sing often. It’s now being shown in film festivals all over the country, and has won three awards including recently at the Austin Film Festival. Never would I think when I started this band 8 years ago that I’d be featured in a movie.
If you want to catch us live, we have two weekly residencies. Sundays we’re at King Bee from 9-11pm and Tuesdays we’re at Half Step also 9-11pm. Both shows are free, come see us.
