Life & Work with Markus Lindsey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Markus Lindsey.

Hi Markus, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, I started photography while in high school. I started working at the Williamson County Sun in Georgetown my junior year. The photographer took interest in me and began teaching me darkroom and photography. That led to me shooting most sporting events for the Georgetown High School and some for Southwestern University my junior and senior years. Of course, this was 1985-1987. Everything was black and white 400 ISO film. I did everything from rolling my own film, processing negatives and developing prints. I had a Nikon FG20 camera and mostly used a 105mm lens.

After high school, I enlisted in the Navy. When I got out of the Navy, I returned to the newspaper. But on the print side. I never really picked up a camera again.

Fast forward some 25 years later and after spending about 20 of those in construction. I got back into printing…this time digital printing. I also started hiking around Central Texas. I had this idea to try and blog about my hikes. Which led to picking up a camera again. New ballgame.

For the last three or four years, I have enjoyed taking pictures all around Central Texas. Mostly landscapes, wildflowers and then I started trying to photograph birds. I got hooked.

Then the question of what to do with all of the pictures besides posting them on Instagram and Facebook. I decided to invest in a quality photo printer and start selling prints. I also started working with a local artist helping her reproduce her artwork for her to sell. Now not only am I doing pop-ups and markets with my booth selling my photos, I am working with other artists on their reproductions.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve really just started selling my prints. I’m still trying to find my niche and my market. As far as my digital artwork services, I think finding clients will come in time. My biggest thing is that I have a full-time job. All of this is my side gig for now.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Digital artwork services is how I refer to what I do. I specialize in taking an artist’s work and digitizing it for reproduction. I have talked to artist that have said “I sold my original, I wish I had a copy of it”. That’s where I come in. I take great pride in my work. I want my reproduction of a watercolor, oil painting or whatever the artist has entrusted in me and to reproduce to look just like the original. I actually had an artist that I work with tell me that she almost sold a reproduction as an original because it was so hard to tell them apart.

What matters most to you?
Enjoying what I do. Whatever that is. If you can’t have fun doing it, don’t do it. I will continue taking pictures whether I sell them or not. I just enjoy getting out in nature and try to capture those moments that only I see.
