Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Larson.
Hi Matthew, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I got started in my love for playing and creating Electronic Dance Music all the way back in high school where I discovered Music Production in 2006. I fell in love. I had finally found THE thing that I knew I could do! I continued to learn and develop my skills in creating music that could inspire others to follow their dreams.
Skip a few years into 2015 where my DJ mentor Victor (DJ Trey) Gutierrez showed me how I could deliver my music to the rest of the world! My first gig in Downtown Austin was at Geisha Room. Not a single person showed up! Ha! Ha! But I didn’t let that stop me. I very quickly got myself a other gig on 6th Street and was immediately hooked!
I was an Open Format DJ ready to play anything under the sun and moon! I wanted to play the EDM I produced but found myself at odds as not everyone wanted to hear it. So I kept my head up and carried on! Playing for college crowds and country music bars alike until I was spinning music at Hotspots like The Ranch, Bufords Beer Garden, and The Venue ATX.
The road to success is never over! I traveled across the country playing shows in various cities, but I always loved coming home and dropping banger beats in my home city.
Today, my focus is producing professional level music in a variety of genres; I’m always available to DJ for weddings, birthdays, boat parties, or even rooftops! I live to entertain!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wasn’t easy almost ever. First gig was a bust. My computer holding over 12 years of music production in songs, projects, and sounds, crashed and deleted it all. I’ve gone through six MacBooks and four different sets of turntables. Not to forget recently I had all my DJ equipment stolen right before Christmas. Thankfully, I was able to retrieve my turntables and continue to bring music to the people!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a DJ and Music Producer, I am a man of many hats. From selecting a range of music for any given event to setting up the stage and equipment for the show.
DJing isn’t just pressing a button and hoping for the best. It’s reading your crowd. Getting to know them sometimes only based on body language. Music must transition from one song to the next seamlessly, but, mistakes happen! Sometimes the best way to deal with a problem is to own it and make fun and interact with the crowd and let them know “I’m only human!”
Music Production is like writing a story. From the first note to the bass drop. A song is not just word and notes. It’s emotions and your heartfelt dreams coursing through your soul that manifest themselves into what you hear vibrating through the air. It’s a universal language and how we can connect to one another.
What sets me apart is my ability to reach all type of people from all backgrounds and nationalities. I like to surpass expectations and leave my crowd in disbelief and astonishment. Then troll them a bit with a meme or two in my music to get a laugh!
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I grew up in the country in Central Texas around Llano and Marble Falls. I played the Tuba all through 6th grade to 12th in Symphonic Band as well Bass Guitar in Jazz Band. I loved every bit of it! Music is in my blood.
