Today we’d like to introduce you to Nat Vazer.
Hi Nat, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
From the age of five, my parents forced me to learn classical piano, but I soon became fascinated with the world of bands and songwriters, having grown up in a household of my family’s 60s and 80s record collection. During high school, I stole my father’s guitar and started to learn Nirvana, The Strokes, and Death Cab for Cutie based on internet guitar tabs. In true DIY fashion, I began writing songs in punk high school bands and self-recording on old PCs with built-in microphones. After quitting a career in law recently, I dived into songwriting full-time in pursuit of a more artful life. I wrote and released my first album, ‘Are This Offensive and Loud?’ in 2020, which was nominated for the Australian Music Prize.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s always been a challenging road. It’s a rollercoaster, and often the journey feels like 2 steps forward, 1 step back. That can be mentally challenging and physically draining. Promoting your music without a manager, label, or booking agent can be challenging. Releasing an album during the pandemic was also difficult, but it taught me a lot about the perks of being independent and the importance of just pursuing the things that excite and make sense to me. The freedom to create, write songs and make music is the thing I keep coming back to time and time again. It keeps me grounded, it keeps me moving, and it makes me feel good. That is all I’ll ever need. It doesn’t matter what comes next.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an Australian songwriter and touring musician from Melbourne. I was nominated for Best Breakthrough Artist at the Music Victoria Awards 2020, and my debut album ‘Is This Offensive And Loud?’ was nominated for the Australian Music Prize 2020. I have a new second album on the horizon and will tour the US for the first time with my band in March. I’m thrilled to be playing at SXSW 2023.
We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success looks different to everyone. For me, success is living an artful life – to achieve longevity in that would be a dream. To be able to create as much as possible and help others do the same as much as possible.
