Life & Work with Nicholas Daniel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Daniel.

Hi Nicholas, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve enjoyed cigars for over nine years and I’m the type of person who likes to make money off things I like to do so my enjoyment pays for itself. I became a member of a nonprofit organization in Aurora, Colorado called the Cigar Lordz which is a group of Gentlemen who came together for the love of the leaf and wanted to do a thing to give back to the community… From there, I desired to really explore the culture of cigars which led to me deciding to make it a business… Opulence was the name because I felt that it defined the very essence of my outlook of the culture of enjoying fine tobacco. I started by sending out monthly tailored subscription boxes of cigars. The timing was perfect because it was at the beginning of vivid so people were excited they could still get the cigars. Through doing this, I started becoming well known around the industry and met people which advised me to get my own cigars for my brand and I did just that. I got with a family from Nicaragua and built a great business and personal relationship with I also was introduced to a local cigar company in Austin named Bobalu Cigars which gave an advantage because it was local I was able to learn the distribution side of things and keep supplies on hand. I eventually started getting my brand in local brick and mortar shops the first was zodix in Georgetown; they gave me my first opportunity to do a cut n light (which is the way we introduce our brand to the consumers) from there, my brand began to grow and bloom I am currently throughout Texas and other cities and states across the country.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road there are a lot of lumps and bumps in this market. Marketing is very hard because of the rules with Tobacco but social media has helped in a major way. Also, sometimes getting inventory is hard coming from other countries but it’s all part of the growth and I’ve learned to find alternative ways to do things.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Back in May of 2020, I found out my dad was about to die literally while I was on the road with my family moving to Austin; he died a week later. But I was able to create and dedicate a special blended cigar that reminded me of him and release it the following year on his birthday; it is my favorite achievement in the business and will be hard to beat.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk taking has not been bad but investing in a market I was new to with major companies who have been around for decades was a risk in itself but had been paying off and I have been asked to work with many of these major brands.

    Authentic motivational comments.
To have a cigar created for your father is moving and displays a glimpse to the foundation of your business.
