Life & Work with Nilam Patel of Austin/Cedar Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nilam Patel.

Hi Nilam, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
When I first started writing poetry it was for the sole purpose of healing. A deep trauma that I had never fully dealt with resurfaced and opened up all the scars I had halfway sewn up years ago. After I wrote my first poem, they just kept coming until writing became a large part of me and who I am.

I set out to finally share my work and was overwhelmed with the sense of community I found. I never realized there were so many individuals out there like me. We are a small niche, but a special one that spreads passion, hope and most of all love.

My words and art are meant for healing and talking about the things that we often keep hidden. They were created to start conversations and invoke deep thought.

Let’s continue to support each other and lift each other up any time we are starting to lose our spark.

Let’s be kind to others but most of all, let’s be kind to ourselves.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I never wrote poetry before but within 2 months I had written my first book. Imposter syndrome when things happen that quickly is definitely existent. Fast forward two years later and I have now published two books within a few years and did the whole process on my own. I learned everything about publishing, illustrating, cover design, illustrations, editing and the business of marketing yourself all while still working as a pharmacist. I enjoy using both sides of my brain and being able to switch between them.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a spoken word poet and host and attend events all over the city. Central Austin has a huge art scene but I am hoping to bring this to Cedar Park and Leander. I hope to encourage busy parents such as myself to take time for your passions and watch as your family realizes a skill of yours that they never knew existed. Be bold with your dreams and the first step and often the hardest is finding what they are in the first place.

What’s next?
I host art and writer events throughout the community. I hope to bring the art scene that central Austin is so well known for closer to this area. I support small businesses at all of my events and the sense of community that brings is priceless.
