Hi Preena, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am Preena Singh, a certified makeup artist based in Austin, TX.
My life took a major turn when I moved to Austin from India in March 2021 after getting married. Coming on an H4 visa meant I couldn’t work, and while I was initially excited about taking a break from my five-year corporate career, the reality of suburban life in Austin soon hit me hard. With no job and plenty of idle time, I found myself struggling. It was a challenging period, and I often questioned my decision to move here.
My husband encouraged me to start creating content to pass the time, which sparked my interest in makeup. Before marriage, I had never done makeup and knew very little about it. During a visit to India, I decided to enroll in a makeup course, determined to become a makeup artist.
When I returned to Austin from my trip to India, my work permit had arrived. Instead of seeking a traditional job, I decided to follow my newfound passion for makeup artistry. This decision brought me immense joy and fulfillment.
Throughout the ups and downs, my journey has taught me the importance of following my passions, finding joy in the little things, and creating meaningful connections. It has been a year since I started my own makeup business, “Glamstoriesby_ps,” and I have never regretted my decision to become a makeup artist.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Running your own business is never easy. You become your own boss, and coming from the corporate world, I had no entrepreneurial skills. I didn’t know how to market my business or reach a broad audience.
As a beginner in the makeup industry, gaining people’s trust and getting booked for special events was challenging. To build my portfolio and credibility, I started doing makeup for free, which provided me with invaluable experience and knowledge.
Staying motivated during slow periods was another challenge. There were months when I didn’t get any bookings, but I never gave up. Instead, I focused on creating makeup content for my social media platforms, ensuring I stayed active and visible.
Given the intense competition in this industry, attracting clients consistently was tough. To stand out, I started offering discounts and waived travel fees, making my services more appealing.
I am still learning every day and striving to grow my business. Despite the hurdles, my passion for makeup keeps me going, and I am committed to improving and expanding my reach in the industry.

What I Do and Specialize In:
I provide makeup services for weddings, special events, photo shoots, and other occasions where clients want to look their best. I specialize in bridal makeup, which involves creating timeless and elegant looks that enhance the bride’s natural beauty while ensuring longevity throughout the big day. I also offer makeup consultations and self-makeup lessons for individuals who want to learn how to apply makeup confidently.
What I Am Known For:
I am known for my attention to detail, personalized approach, and ability to create flawless, natural-looking makeup. My clients appreciate my ability to listen to their needs and preferences, ensuring they feel comfortable and confident with the final result. I take pride in using high-quality products and staying updated with the latest trends and techniques in the makeup industry.
What I Am Most Proud Of:
I am most proud of the journey that brought me to where I am today. Starting from scratch with no prior knowledge of makeup, I have built a successful business through dedication, continuous learning, and perseverance. One of my proudest moments was receiving my first bridal booking and seeing the bride’s ecstatic reaction to her look.
What Sets Me Apart:
What sets me apart from others in the industry is my unique journey and the personal touch I bring to each client. My background in the corporate world has instilled in me a strong work ethic and organizational skills, which I apply to my business. Additionally, my experience as a newcomer in the makeup industry allows me to connect with clients who are also new to makeup, offering them a comfortable and educational experience.
My dedication to providing exceptional service and my passion for helping clients feel beautiful and confident is the foundation of “Glamstoriesby_ps.” Despite the challenges, I remain committed to growing and evolving as a makeup artist, always striving to exceed my clients’ expectations.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
People are often surprised when I tell them that before becoming a makeup artist, I never wore makeup. It was never something I was interested in, but it eventually became a passion. If I hadn’t moved to the US from India, “Glamstoriesby_ps” would never have been born. I would likely still be working my 9-5 job. Makeup emerged as a way to combat the boredom in my life, and it transformed into a fulfilling career.
