Life & Work with Raven Anderson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Raven Anderson.

Hi Raven, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Since I was about five, I took assertiveness with dressing myself and making a scene about it. It always felt like an important task to create an ensemble from head to toe. I skipped over my immediate love and passion up until freshman year of college. My roommate and I would constantly thrift and I took a liking to taking something old and cutting, ripping, and changing into something that felt new to me.

This instantly took a spiraling effect and I ended up changing my major to Fashion Design. I didn’t know the first thing about fashion as a profession, but I had a list of ideas and creations that I was constantly wanting to produce. As my knowledge about the fashion industry grew, so did my dedication. I continue to thrift graphic tee’s and denim and I use various dye and bleaching techniques. With a more developed creative sense, I’ve been able to obtain sewing and concepting skills that have led me to create custom clothing for artists and special events.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing has come easy in this industry, but that is probably the most satisfying part about it. I had absolutely no knowledge of garment construction and sewing before school so learning something that I feel so passionate about but having to start from scratch can definitely make you question if it is something that you really want to pursue as a career or just a hobby. I struggled the most with identifying myself as a designer. I didn’t know who I wanted to be or where I wanted to go with it so it almost felt impossible to set any real goals. Persistence kept me afloat along with some of the relationships I developed with my classmates.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create exclusive and individually costumed fashions that derive from her personal experiences and imagination. The versatility of Raven’s designs allows people to be themselves correspondingly with her own formations. Raven tends to draw inspirations from urban streetwear in the 90’s and infused her day to day lifestyle to discover new forms of fashion.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Stay persistent and save up! Persistence will take you so far, and nothing about creating fashion is cheap, lol.
