Today we’d like to introduce you to Sanam Nadeem.
Hi Sanam, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Sanam Almas Nadeem, and I was born in Karachi, Pakistan. I started sketching as a child for fun. At age five, I created my first sketch – my father. My friends and family encouraged me, and I continued my passion for art. After elementary school at Karachi Academy, I graduated from Khatoon-e-Pakistan, Karachi. I then pursued my L.L.B. from S.M. Law College in 2001. While getting my formal education, I continued sketching and started some painting. I also developed an interest in other expressions of art like handcraft, henna designs, candle art, landscapes, seascapes, and wildlife. I started doing Oil Painting, Glass Painting, Collage, and Sketching at the Mashkoor School of Arts to give a professional touch to my passion.
Until this point, I have worked with many Mediums like Oil painting, glass painting, acrylic painting, watercolor painting, ink work, and Resin art. My favorite subjects are calligraphy, landscapes, and abstract art. More recently, I worked with oil, acrylic, and resin art. I do not repeat any of my artwork because I like to create new things/designs. My work is displayed at U.T., Round Rock, TX; My calligraphy paintings have been auctioned to raise funds for community services. My painting was also selected for Art Space In Roundrock. I participate in workshops to teach Arabic calligraphy and art. I also make custom paintings for my clients based on their interests. I moved to New Jersey in 2001 after marriage. I now have a caring husband and four adorable children in Austin, TX. Despite my busy schedule, I cannot turn my back on my true passion, so I paint whenever I have time.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In the beginning, it was hard to get my work out there, but the people in the Austin community are very considerate in helping others. I would look for exhibitions where I could display my artwork. I would go to festivals and small local events where I could get discovered. Once people started appreciating my work, I got more custom orders from people, which gave me confidence. During these times, I also had kids and was a housewife, which made finding time to make art difficult, but I got through it because my friends would encourage me to get myself out there. My husband and kids recognize this as my passion and have helped me throughout this long and tough journey. My parents were overall my best supporters, which is why I never stopped considering art my passion.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in painting landscapes, seascapes, and calligraphy. Many people know me because of the painting workshops I teach others how to paint and do calligraphy. I am most proud of my balance between my work life and my personal life. I believe what sets me apart from others is that I am not afraid to work with different types of mediums and face challenges along the way.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I have taken many risks, and I believe everyone should because it increases your knowledge, experience, and confidence. It gives you a lot to learn. For example, I mixed different mediums to create a piece of art that I wasn’t sure would turn out well, but others’ reactions helped me realize that I shouldn’t discourage myself and instead be confident enough to take risks. If I take a risk and it doesn’t turn out well, I don’t sit back and whine about what has already happened; instead, I try to look for a solution.
Pricing:
- I usually customize orders based on my clients budget.
- Pricing depends on the size of the art piece as well as the mediums being used and the time and effort it takes to make the art work.
