Life & Work with Ty Griffin of San Marcos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ty Griffin

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started three years ago recording in my closet. Putting foam up and blankets over my head to keep the extra sound out. I had the idea to start making my first mixtape 2021 and released it late 2022. This was kind of my first real experience with higher production. After I released that I had a calling on my heart to tell my story of making Christ the King of my life. So I wrote and worked for 2 years putting my latest project out to tell that story. Since then I’ve been doing a few live shows, done interviews on SHN and Very Bold Radio, and have collated with other artist.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been easy. Most of my music is about my life and life isn’t easy. Going to college, working, and making music is difficult. Im a senior currently and many times I have to trade my passion for music to meet a deadline. Working and saving money while also trying to make time for the studio is a challenge as well. Also writing about life isn’t pretty. Many times I feel as if I don’t want to put some music out because of how personal the stories are. Much of my music is opening up about my failures and how it affected me. This last project was very difficult in that respect but very rewarding.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a rapper, singer, performer, producer, collaboration, and do all of my visual art. I specialize in rapping and beat making. With my last project (ACT TWO: Rise) I really focused on the producing aspect of my art, I have wanted to tell this story for years now and I knew I had to do it right. This ability to sonically produce what I have visually in my mind is what makes my art possible.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I have taken many risks doing this. Obviously the first risk any performer takes is getting on stage or putting your first song out. That’s the one thing that prevents people from doing what they have dreamed of doing. I think all of my art is a risk because it’s personal but if you don’t tell your story who will?
