Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Doll.
Alicia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As a child, I can remember sitting in my mother’s bathroom watching her put on make-up just completely in awe. It fascinated me to watch the transformation that took place not only in her appearance but the confidence that came with it once she was finished with her beauty routine. I began stealing her make-up and secretly using it, immediately experiencing that confidence that I saw in her. This sparked my life-long passion for make-up artistry, so much so that I turned it into my career. I was self-taught and worked as a make-up artist for eight years which eventually led me to where I am today- permanent make-up artistry. Being able to deliver that confidence to other women is incredibly rewarding and is absolutely my dream job.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I trained in 2017 and began taking clients after only a few weeks as it all came very naturally to me given my background. I didn’t initially think my career would take off right away after the transition into permanent make-up but luckily, it did and I didn’t struggle in this department thanks to social media.
However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. I had no idea how to run my own business and I learned very quickly that there was A LOT more that goes into it behind the scenes than the artistry itself. Unfortunately, making mistakes is sometimes the best way you can learn things. Let’s just say that a lot were made early on and there were times that I wanted to give up because of this. At the same time, I started to feel like I was positively impacting people’s lives which became a driving force to continue. I will say that I’m still no expert at the business side of things but I am determined to get it all right one day because of my passion and success on the art side.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a cosmetic tattoo artist. I can do it all but I specialize in eyebrows and I am most known for the effortless, natural look. I would say that some of the things that set me apart from others in my industry are my background in make-up, my constant continued education, the dedication I have to my craft and the positive energy I bring to the table. In 2020 I was recognized and recruited by the owner of Fresh Cosmetics Studio. The studio officially opened in 2021 and is one of the few cosmetic studios in Austin. I’m honored to be a part of the team.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
This industry is ever-evolving and keeps me on my toes. Not only will the trends continue to change cosmetically, but also the technique in which we perform will change as well. This is why continued education is vital to staying current and on top of the trends. There is no telling what the industry will look like in five years time!
