Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Harris.
Hi Alyssa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My life has revolved around music and singing for as long as I can remember. As I was growing up, I was involved in every musical, talent show, recital and dance team that I possibly could. I was also writing songs and performing them whenever I got the chance. After graduating college, I knew I wanted to sing professionally, so I set out to audition for professional singer jobs in LA and beyond; eventually, I began traveling and performing on cruise ships, then the Las Vegas strip, and many places in between. I’m now performing in Austin both as a solo artist as well as a featured vocalist in different bands. I love to share all of that love and life experience in my vocal coaching business, where I help singers of every background reach their goals with lessons, career coaching, and singer-specific wellness programs and more.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like anything that is worth having, the road to becoming a working performer has been a long journey of blood, sweat and tears, albeit a rewarding one. You have to get used to rejection, “failure,” people not liking your stuff, drama, anxiety, absolutely certain things, long-distance friendships and relationships, and so much more. Even still, I wouldn’t trade this journey for the world. Even when I face obstacles, I don’t ever want to quit because it’s my passion.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
One of the tenets of my career as a working singer has spawned into my newest project- Dynamic Voices Singing Studio. I provide singing lessons, vocal coaching, and a variety of different resources for established and aspiring singers and for everyone in between. I help singers visualize, plan, and train for the type of singing opportunities and careers they see themselves in.
I specialize in the whole spectrum of the singing experience: helping singers overcome stage fright, prepare for auditions, develop their personal singing style and so much more. What makes my business unique is my first-hand experience of being a professional performer and having to learn everything that I know from being out there performing for so many years. It’s the real-world professional familiarity backed by my educational training and background that offers my singers a top-quality coaching relationship and experience when they work with me!
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
As cliche as it may sound, I always preach how important it is to remember that patience is key. Many people want a “get rich quick” formula or an easy few-step process to their end goals but it almost rarely ever happens that way. When I was starting out, I would let setbacks mess with my self-esteem and my progress, and I’ll admit that they sometimes have me negative thoughts about myself as an artist. I can’t tell you how many times I would get frustrated when I felt that despite all my efforts, I wasn’t “there” yet. Over time, I realized that not yet being where you want to be professionally is actually an amazing thing—it inspired you to keep going, to look within and ask yourself what needs to be strengthened and nourished to get closer to your goals. Another piece of advice I’d emphasize would be to STOP caring what people think, and just follow your joy!
