Meet Amanda Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Johnson.

Hi Amanda, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
When I was in middle school, I started discovering things like YouTube and Vimeo, and I was obsessed with the film-making side of it, especially on Vimeo. So I begged my mom to buy me a camera, and after a few months, she agreed to pay half of it. This was around the time when photo cameras started to also be able to shoot really good videos, and so I spent the summer saving up for a Canon T2i, the hottest thing out at the time! Unfortunately, I figured out the hard way that shooting video was very expensive and I really didn’t have the patience at the time to get good at it. So I switched my focus to the photo side of the camera. I shot everything – weddings, portraits, music. And eventually, the last one stuck.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’m not exactly a people person, and that’s not helpful a lot of times when you work behind the scenes. It was a real challenge to put myself out there and introduce myself or reach out to certain people because of how unnatural it felt to me. But like all things, practice makes perfect.

Also location. Austin is a very musical city, but the infrastructure side of the music industry just isn’t here. It’s in places like LA, Nashville, and New York. So it can be harder to “break into” the music industry (on a national or even international scale) from a city like Austin.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a music photographer and videographer. I tour with artists and bands and document their travels and all the other craziness that comes along with that. In the past, I’ve toured with Calum Scott, Saint Motel, and Andy Grammer, but often shoot events, products, and a few other things when I’m home in Austin.

I experiment in a lot of different mediums which I feel sets me apart and widens my creative Rolodex. Apart from photography and video, I’ve experimented with animation and graphic design. I’ve also been making beats since I was 18 and played guitar since I was 16. I’m an artist working with other artists and I think many of the people I work with appreciate that. I have a friend in a (pretty successful) band that constantly asks for my opinion on new stuff he’s working on or listening to. To not even “be a musician” (the only people who have ever heard my music are my friends and family) but have musicians ask my opinion on music I think is a testament to how I’m constantly trying to explore new creative avenues and expand my creative abilities.
