Meet Andy Comer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy Comer.

Hi Andy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 2015, life was good. I was living the dream in a small town about an hour east of Dallas. Married with three daughters, we were happy and comfortable. We had no reason to change and no reason to rock the boat. But comfort is not a good reason to keep plugging along. God was calling us out of our comfortable life to take a step of faith into the unknown. We decided to move to a place we had never been to start a new church. Instead of moving directly to Central Texas, we moved the opposite direction to Central Arkansas. There we would serve on staff at a church called Antioch Conway.

This church had a desire to send an entire team to start a new church in Georgetown, TX. It was a bold move, but one we were all eager to take. In the summer of 2017, my family along with twenty-five other adults relocated to Georgetown to begin serving our community. We served strangers at the park, teachers at the schools, and our neighbors next door. We began building relationships with people from all backgrounds and walks of life. On January 21, 2018, we launched weekly worship services in an elementary school in Georgetown. Antioch Georgetown Church had moved from vision to reality! Over the last three years, we’ve seen people grow in their faith and serve their community. We’ve seen lives changed and relationships restored. Our church has grown from a small group in our living room to over 400 people who gather for worship each weekend. It’s been quite the journey!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a church has been the hardest thing I’ve ever been a part of, but it’s also been the most rewarding. Just because something is hard, doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing. We’ve experienced countless roadblocks along the way, but looking back God has been faithful through every difficulty. Early on when we were still settling down in Georgetown, it was challenging to tell people about our new church, Antioch Georgetown. We didn’t have a building and we weren’t gathering for weekly worship services. We discovered that not everyone was as eager about the vision as we were. But that’s ok! We stuck with it. Another big challenge we faced was finding land to purchase for our future ministry facility. Land is becoming less and less available and more and more expensive. Through God’s direction and provision, we were able to purchase property just off of state highway 130. We continue to see new neighborhoods under development around our property.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our mission at Antioch Georgetown is to lead people to follow Christ in a life-changing way. We genuinely care about people and our passion is teaching God’s Word in a way that’s simple and clear. People who come to Antioch often comment how we go out of our way to remember your name. We really do want people to be known here and not lost in the crowd. One area we’re most proud of is our relationship with the special needs community. It can often be difficult for adults with special needs to be part of a church. At Antioch, adult with special needs aren’t just welcome, but they belong. I believe every person has two primary purposes: to love God and to love others. That’s the heart of Antioch Georgetown Church!

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I’m not sure if I have a specific favorite memory from childhood, but I do have a favorite collective memory. As a kid, I was active in sports. I played baseball, basketball, football, and soccer. I remember my parents were always there. No matter what the sporting season was, if I was on the field my parents were in the stands. I don’t take that for granted. Not every child has that fond memory. I’m who I am today because of the encouragement and support of great parents!
